Principal’s Report

PCYC is coming to Outside School Hours Care at Coomera Springs SS

PCYC will be providing outside school hours care at Coomera Springs State School following a department procurement process. The changeover from Camp Australia to PCYC is scheduled for 26 June 2023 coinciding with Vacation Care for the Winter Vacation. Camp Australia will continue to operate these services until that date. We are working with both providers to best ensure a smooth transition for the families of students who require outside school hours care.

PCYC will be providing information on their services including on how to register your child/ren in the next few weeks.

We celebrate our community events so far this year

We take this opportunity to celebrate the participation of families in large numbers for several community events so far this year. It is great to have our community turning out for these events and provides benefits for students to see your support. We welcome our parents, families and community into the school for these events.

Thank you to the hundreds who turned out for:

  • Our launch for Fun Fit Friday at Rosemallow Parklands
  • Cross Country
  • Easter Hat Parade
  • Triple M 92.5 Live broadcast

New fence on pedestrian island

Many families will have seen the new fence on the pedestrian island at the front of the school. Gold Coast City Council have provided this additional facility to enhance pedestrian safety on the pedestrian island adjacent to the vehicle student pick up zone.

The first lane is a designated bus lane. We advise our community of the signage and markings in place for the use of this area.

We have been working in conjunction with GCCC for some time to continue to improve safe student drop off and pick up.

In order to avoid congestion, you are encouraged to:

Retime your pick -up: The student pick-up area is supervised until 3:20pm. Arriving a few minutes after 3pm will provide a very smooth pick-up process and your students will be cared for until then. Try different options to spread out the pick-up timing.

Active School Travel: use of the western car park is often quieter or other options involving some active school travel within a few minutes of the school (for students of sufficient age and maturity)

Keeping up with school information

Our school communicates with our school community in a number of ways. This newsletter is one way. We also have class newsletters going home a couple of times a term. We also have a school Facebook page. Many families find that Facebook is a convenient way to receive updates and information.

Please see the following links to assist with accessing our school Facebook page.

Parents and community members who are not on Facebook may access the Facebook updates via the feed on the school website.

News from Head of Inclusion

Literacy strategies are techniques and activities that can help children develop reading and writing skills. As a parent, you can play a vital role in helping your child develop these skills by implementing effective literacy strategies at home.

The importance of literacy cannot be overstated. Literacy is a fundamental skill that lays the foundation for academic success and lifelong learning. Children who have strong literacy skills are more likely to succeed in school and later in life. They are also better equipped to communicate effectively, think critically, and solve problems.

Here are some effective literacy strategies that parents can use to help their child develop literacy skills:

1. Read aloud to your child: Reading aloud to your child is one of the most effective ways to build their literacy skills. It helps children develop vocabulary, comprehension, and phonemic awareness. Reading together can also be a great bonding experience.

2. Encourage your child to read independently: Providing your child with books that they enjoy can motivate them to read independently. Encourage your child to read books that are at their level and gradually increase the difficulty as their skills improve.

3. Talk about what you read: After reading a book together, discuss the story with your child. Ask them questions about the characters, plot, and setting. This helps develop their comprehension skills and encourages critical thinking.

4. Write together: Encourage your child to write by providing them with writing materials and prompts. Writing can help develop vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills. Writing stories or journaling can also help children express their thoughts and emotions.

5. Limit screen time: Too much screen time can interfere with literacy development. Encourage your child to read and write instead of spending time on electronic devices.

Overall, implementing effective literacy strategies can help your child develop the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. By reading, writing, and discussing stories together, you can create a love of learning and a strong foundation for future success.

Upcoming Excursions – Permission Notes to Be Returned

The Year 4 Music Centre of Excellence students have been invited to attend a special concert by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra on Friday 9th June. The much-loved children's book The Lost Thing, by Australian illustrator and author Shaun Tan has already been turned into an award-winning film, now it becomes a magical concert experience, thanks to the music of acclaimed presenter and composer Paul Rissmann. This is a spellbinding tale of a boy who discovers a strange creature on the beach, and tries to find a place where it belongs. QSO musicians and the Birralee Voices Choir will perform Rissmann’s Elfman-like music for The Lost Thing alongside other great classical pieces to demonstrate how composers can use an orchestra to create different feelings and sounds. Students received their permission notes for this excursion last week in their COE lesson.

Senior Choir members will represent CSSS at the biennial Choral Fanfare competition on Monday 22nd May. Our Senior choir will perform “On The Hill” (which they sang beautifully at our school Anzac Service on Monday), and a Spanish song “Oye La Musica” (Hear the Music). Students will receive their permission notes for this excursion at the choir rehearsal next Tuesday.

Date Claimer: Music Showcase Evening

The CSSS Music Showcase Evening will be held on Wednesday the 7th of June at 5:30pm in our school hall. This will be a very exciting evening of music and entertainment. All of our Instrumental Music Ensembles (Band and Strings) will be performing, as well as our Choirs, Ukulele Band, Drumline and Music Centre of Excellence Classes! This is a great opportunity for parents of potential Instrumental Music and COE students to come along and see what our program has to offer. Our whole school community is invited to come along and enjoy some wonderful entertainment!

Music Shirts – Clearance

The P&C have advised they still have remaining stock of Music Shirts from the old supplier (identical looking shirts) – these are available from the Tuckshop for $21 while stocks last. If your child’s size is not available at the tuckshop you are still able to order online via School Locker’s website .

Music shirts can be worn to school as a uniform option on Thursdays this year, and will be required for Choir, Band, Drumline and Ukulele Band for their performances in Term 2. Year 4 Music COE Students will also wear their Music Shirts for their excursion at the beginning of June.
