Principal’s Report
NAPLAN
NAPLAN is moving from May to March. In 2023, NAPLAN tests will be held from 15 to 27 March. This means schools and teachers will have results earlier in the year to better inform school and system teaching and learning programs.
This year is the second year of NAPLAN being completed in an on-line format. This provides significant advantages to individualise the test to each individual student. NAPLAN is designed in a branched format with students starting at the same place then moving to different sets of questions ensuring that the test is tailored for the student. This provides the right amount of gentle challenge for each student. This worked very well for our students in 2022 and marks significant advances in assessment.

Our explicit improvement agenda
Our focus on students learning to read and become literate continues for 2023, as our core focus. This includes the use of reading screeners, running records to diagnose and target responses to support students in their reading. Our approach includes the extension of the InitiaLit program to Year 2 and an early pilot of PLD in a Year 3 class. We apply an evidence-based approach known as the Science of Reading school-wide. This guide will enable parents to help their children to learn to read.
Our reading results are highly comparable to the top third of schools and we look to stretch these even further to benefit our students.
Keeping up with school information
Our school communicates with our school community in a number of ways. This newsletter is one way. We also have class newsletters going home a couple of times a term. We also have a school Facebook page. Many families find that Facebook is a convenient way to receive updates and information.
Please see the following links to assist with accessing our school Facebook page.

Parents and community members who are not on Facebook may access the Facebook updates via the feed on the school website.
COVID Management
We have entered a new phase in the management of COVID as we continue to live with this virus. Please see the following link for the most up to date information on COVID in schools.

News from our Music Department
Instrumental Music News
We are off to a great start for 2023!
Band and Strings Programs are now both up and running, all Instrumental Music students have had their first Iessons for the year and should have received all the necessary paperwork for enrolment and instrument hire if applicable. Please ensure forms are returned ASAP and levies paid.
Parents, please check your child’s lesson and Band/String Ensemble rehearsal days and times (especially the Before/After School commitments) and remind students to bring the necessary equipment each week. This year there are some Year 4 students who have Junior Band on Monday and their lesson on Wednesday – these students will need to bring their instrument to school both days.
If you have not received an email from your child’s Instrumental Music teacher, please check your junk email – then let us know if you are missing communication so we can add you into the relevant email group for further communications.
(Band = Craig Alloway callo10@eq.edu.au ) (Strings = Steph Williams swill541@eq.edu.au )
(Instrumental Music Coordinator = Alison Murray amurr51@eq.edu.au please CC in emails to speed up response time)
Junior Choir Prep – Year 2
Sign Up Day for our Junior Choir was held on Thursday 9th February, and so far we have approximately 50 children from Prep – Year 2 wanting to be in our 2023 Junior Choir, which is absolutely wonderful! Some students may not have heard about the Choir before the Sign Up Day, but it is not too late for them to join! If your child would like to be a part of the choir, please email Mrs Alison Murray amurr51@eq.edu.au so your child can be added to the list. The Junior Choir will be rehearsing on Thursdays at first break in the M Block Music Room.
NB: Children who were in the Junior Choir last year will need to sign up again if they still want to be included, as the Choir lists do not “roll over” from year to year.
Performance Groups for Years 3-6
We have some fantastic performance opportunities for our older students this year.
Drumline (Monday 2nd break) Year 5 - 6 BY AUDITION – sign up to audition for the drumline.
Senior Choir (Tuesday 1st break) Year 3 – 6 performing at Anzac Day Service for the school, excursion in May
Ukulele Band (Friday 1st break) Year 4 – 6* learn to play popular songs on the ukulele.
*Year 3 will have an opportunity to join Ukulele Band later in the year.
If you have children in Years 3 – 6 encourage them to come along and get involved!
Music Shirts – Clearance
The P&C have advised they still have remaining stock of Music Shirts from the old supplier (identical looking shirts) – these are available from the Tuckshop for $21 while stocks last. If your child’s size is not available at the tuckshop you are still able to order online via School Locker’s website.
Music shirts can be worn to school as a uniform option on Thursdays this year.
Music Accessories and Equipment Available Through School Locker
Does your child need a new Music Exercise Book? Reeds for their instrument or other accessories? Check out the “Music” section on School Locker – music purchases made online can be collected from the Uniform Shop. If you are unsure on what to buy, please email Alison Murray amurr51@eq.edu.au
