Principal’s Report
2023 Book Pack Drop Off and Classroom Orientation - Date Claimer
Book pack drop off and classroom orientation - Friday 20 January 2023, 2:30pm - 3:30pm
We look forward to welcoming all of our 2023 students and families to come along to school to drop off book packs to classrooms prior to the start of school.
This is an opportunity to locate your student's classroom and to drop off any heavy book packs and materials prior to school commencing. Your child will have less anxiety by knowing what to expect and who their teacher is. Class teachers will get to meet their students and families in an informal way prior to school.
This year, we are hoping that the vast majority of students will be able to come along on this afternoon to prepare for school.
Families will be able to drop off book packs for one or more children in any order during the time allotted to take the pressure off for the Monday morning.
First day of school - Monday 23 January 2023
For families who are able to come in for the Book Pack Drop Off, the start of school should be really smooth. Hopefully students will be able to be dropped off to their new classrooms where they will be welcomed and get to know about their class and new year level. There will then be an opportunity for parents to go for a cuppa and transition into the rest of their day.
The start of a new school year can be a stressful and emotional time. Our plans are for the start to be as smooth and successful as possible.
Safety on bicycles and scooters
Active school travel is great for students who are old enough and capable enough to ride to school. Christmas is also a time when more of our students will be possibly receiving new or upgraded bikes, scooters or other rideables. Please ensure that all students who are riding have a well fitted helmet, know the recently changed road rules and are safe for themselves and other path/road users.
Please use the QR code or this link to access the most information on rideables.
Every day counts
Full student attendance can now resume.
We know that COVID has disrupted normal school attendance over the past couple of years. We welcome back all students to school every day unless they are unwell or with another valid reason.
Current COVID guidelines are available here .
Students who attend school every day receive all of the learning, see their friends and establish good life - long habits for success.
Celebrate Success
We are really impressed with the achievements of our students across a range of fields.
We celebrate the great achievements in recent weeks in our slideshow in this newsletter. This fortnight, we highlight Footsteps to Fame finals, Year 5/6 Robotics, 2022 school captains, Remembrance Day, Tuckshop Day and school sports representatives this year.

Attendance
We want your children at school
All schools in Queensland are committed to providing safe and supportive learning environments for all students to address their educational needs.
Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience. Attendance means not only attending school every day, but also arriving at school on time and remaining at school for the entire day.
From our close observations, students who are continually late, often become anxious about walking into a class that is already settled, hence creating a situation where the student would rather not come to school. The risk of missing instructions for core lessons is high and therefore is often disruptive to other students’ learning and settlement when a student enters the class late.
Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and attends school on all school days, unless there is a reasonable excuse. Schools are mandated to monitor attendance of students and follow up with parents and caregivers for any unexplained absences.
At Coomera Springs State School, we aim for 93% Attendance Minimum. 93% Minimum means:
- No more than 13 days off every year
- No more than one day off every month
- Over the course of primary school, 93% minimum attendance means missing 3 ½ days over 1 Term
- Over the course of 13 years of schooling, 93% minimum attendance means missing 169 days of schooling – that is nearly one full year of learning
- We believe that no more than 13 days of absence from school every year is more than reasonable for a healthy student
How to Report a Student Absence at Coomera Springs
Just a reminder that all absences must be reported to Administration by any of the following methods:
- Leave a message on the school absence line Ph: 5519 5300 – dial 1
- Email Administration admin@coomeraspringsss.eq.edu.au
- Reply to the SMS message – please state your child’s name and reason for absence
You may also email your child’s class teacher, however Administration must be advised in order for your child’s absence to be recorded with the correct code.
Your assistance in following our absence procedure is greatly appreciated.
News from our Guidance Officer
Starting High School
Starting high school means big changes such as; new friends, more teachers, study and homework, and a new campus. It’s natural for children to have mixed feelings about starting high school. You can make this transition easier by preparing children practically and emotionally. Routines, healthy food, sleep, talking and support for new friendships can help with the transition to high school.

Cyber Safety – Keeping Children Safe
How do you help keep your child safe while they are online?
Queensland Education suggests the following ideas:
- put computers in open spaces within your home
- remind your child that content can be posted instantaneously, the downfall is that they can potentially post something without thinking about the ramifications.
- educate your child about appropriate online behaviour and the need for respectful communication with other internet users
- keep an eye on what your child is doing online (both in the home and on any mobile devices they may have access to e.g. phones, music devices and tablets)
- set clear rules about what sites and activities they are allowed to access
- install software to limit their use and monitor/restrict the sites they visit
- discuss a plan with your child about how to address any cyber safety issues that may arise (make sure they know you will be supportive if they mention anything and that they will not get in trouble)
- encourage them to find someone they feel safe talking to, such as yourself, a relative, a teacher or a trusted adult
Additionally, it’s important to be aware of popular social media apps and their age ratings. See below:
