Principal’s Report
Welcome back to Term 3
Welcome back to school for Term 3. We really have a busy term planned with lots of special events and excellent opportunities for students. The term starts with NAIDOC Week and the Kokoda Challenge with the Year 5 Camp a highlight towards the end of the term. In between, we have the St Stephens' Spelling Bee, Beenleigh Eisteddfod, Gala Sports days, Life Education, Science Week, Children's Book Week and Year 6 Market Day. This is really going to be a great term ahead.
Our focus on teaching and learning continues for Term 3 and students should be focusing upon 'bumping up' their Semester 1 results through feedback provided in the Semester 1 reports. Learning results for Semester 1 have shown that the vast majority of students continue to achieve year level expectations and many are achieving at a higher level.
As we enter Term 3, we have some special dates to note:
Gold Coast Show public holiday - Friday 26 August (School and Camp Australia closed)
State-wide Student Free Day - Friday 2 September (School closed with Camp Australia operating)
End of Term 3 - Friday 16 September
Spring Vacation - 17 September to 3 October
Monday 3 October - Queen's Birthday public holiday (School and Camp Australia closed)
The school operates as normal during the Brisbane Ekka week.
School Opinion Surveys- Parents/ Carers
Our school values your opinions on school. As part of this, parents will be invited to complete a School Opinion Survey via email. We encourage all families to complete the survey prior to the close on 12 August. The following information provides the detail for parents on the School Opinion Survey.
Families with one or more enrolled children at your school will receive one invitation to complete the survey. The parent/caregiver to receive the invitation is selected based on information and email address in OneSchool.
- Participation is by invitation only. There is no generic survey link that can be used by all parents.
- Parent survey invitations will be sent over a number of days in the week beginning Monday 11 July. It is recommended that schools advise parents prior that they will receive an email from the department. The survey will close on 12 August.
- DO NOT share any survey link from a parent invitation email. Each link is unique and can only be used once by the parent. One parent per family will receive her/his survey link via email. No logins or passwords are needed, parents can simply click on the link and complete the survey.
- The survey invitation email uses the subject line: School Opinion Survey for parents/caregivers, 2022; parents should check junk email folders if it can’t be found.
- No involvement from the school is required, but promoting SOS through the usual communication channels (e.g. school newsletters etc.) will increase response rates and make the data more meaningful for schools.
- Parents can complete the survey as soon as they have received an invitation and do not need to wait until the official open date of 18 July.
School opinion surveys - Year 5 and 6 Students
Students will receive a Student Survey via their departmental email address. Teachers will assist with school time to complete these surveys with each student able to answer anonymously to reflect their own opinions.
Uniform reminders
This week, we remind families of our uniform requirements for school. After some cooler weeks, we are starting to see students arriving in a range of non-uniform items, including hoodies. Hoodies are not permitted for play due to the choking risk posed, as well as being non-uniform items.
We ask families and students to check on the uniform requirements. Please check in lost property as this is piled up, please check at home for the uniform jumper that all students possess. Uniform items are also available through School Locker, some items at the Tuckshop or via second hand items. The school also has an emergency supply in cases of genuine need or in case of accidents to support students in need.
This week, we are reminding students of uniform requirements for our school. Thank you for your assistance with this.
Kokoda Challenge
Congratulations to our five teams who completed the 18km schools’ event at the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge last Saturday. These teams of four students and one teacher have been training for months in preparation for the event. We are very proud that every member of our teams managed to complete the event. It is more than a physical challenge as the students honour our servicemen and women as well as honouring the values of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.
Our teams were able to participate due to the wonderful sponsorship of some local businesses.
We shout out to Satin Stitch Embroidery for team shirts this year.
The Kokoda Challenge is a charity that supports the development of youth through taking on this challenge. We thank our wonderful sponsors of our teams to meet the expenses of entering the challenge for our teams.
We thank our wonderful 2022 sponsors:
Exclusive Customs Panel and Paint
Zaraffas Upper Coomera (Two teams)

School Review Feedback
Our school was recently involved in a scheduled full school review. Thank you to everyone who contributed in a variety of ways. We continue to highlight some of the findings from the school review report.
The leadership team articulates a belief that the classroom environment plays a vital role in student learning as the ‘third teacher’. Through understanding the success criteria and the expectation of achievement levels, student achievement may be supported. Teachers and school leaders are committed to making learning visible across the school and learning walls are displayed in each classroom. Learning walls display annotated marking guides, samples of student work and exemplars, outline clear learning intentions and success criteria for lessons, and are identified by the leadership team as a high-yield teaching strategy that appear in all classrooms. Assessment for learning is supported by the class learning walls, which assist students to reflect on the level of their work and receive feedback. Some learning walls are co-constructed with students and contain their learning goals, and display the GTMJ. Many students articulate how helpful the learning walls are, and how the walls provide feedback and contribute to their learning.
Students continuing learning during the cold and flu season
We thank our school families for keeping their students away from school with symptoms. This is keeping our COVID rate down which is vitally important at this time. If your child has mild symptoms and is capable of completing learning tasks, we would like them to continue their learning until they can return to school. Students may be able to complete work on OneNote or via learning that can be emailed home.
These are exceptional times, but we would like to see all students continue their learning wherever possible.
Current COVID Measures – COVID Normal
Please see the following most up-to-date guidelines:
- The vaccination mandate for staff, contractors and volunteers was rescinded at the end of June
- Face masks not required but strongly encouraged indoors and supported
- Mass gatherings and events can resume
- Restrictions on parents, carers and visitors eased
- All assemblies, incursions, camps and excursions can recommence
- We continue our day cleaner to continually sanitise high touch areas during school hours
- Students who choose to wear face masks will continue to be supported
- We maintain a supply of face masks to support staff and students who request
- Anyone who is unwell or with symptoms to isolate away from school and get tested
- We maintain a supply or RATs for unwell staff and unwell students to take home
- Close contact rules changed as of 6pm on Thursday 28 April - provided close contacts test negative and wear face masks may leave home.
Our community keeping everyone safe
We are all very aware that coronavirus has been and is circulating within our broader community. We acknowledge and thank many families doing the right thing in getting tested and isolating if positive. The school has a supply of RATs to be sent home with students who are referred to sick bay with symptoms. Coomera Springs families experiencing symptoms at home can access testing through HAAN Respiratory Centre (100m south of the school) or any testing centre or RAT supplier. Testing and isolating if positive is helping to reduce the spread of the virus at school.
Confirmed cases of COVID are occurring within our school community on a daily basis. Vigilance in keeping students with symptoms at home and getting tested is still the best way to contain the spread at this time. Thank you for testing and isolating if positive or close contact. This is important at this time.
Celebrate Success
We are really impressed with the achievements of our students. Students achieving well in their learning and across other areas such as sport.
We celebrate NAIDOC Week, Kokoda Challenge, Gala Sport and the South Queensland Primary All Schools Touch in our slideshow in this newsletter.

Kind regards,
Chris McMillan

LATE ARRIVALS and EARLY DEPARTURES:
Explicit teaching begins at 8.40am and finishes at 3.00pm. Consistently arriving after 8.40am or departing before 3.00pm, may mean your child is missing quality learning time.
Arriving late, often means the class teacher has to stop the lesson, welcome your child, explain what they have missed and then return his/her attention back to the class who is trying to wait patiently.
Departing early, also means the class teacher has to stop the lesson, answer the call from the office, support your child to pack up belongings, and then return attention to the rest of the class who, again is waiting.
We believe that all of our students can achieve success at our school with our dedicated teaching staff, their expertise and research-based pedagogy but this can only happen if our students are at school, on time, learning every day.
We understand that some late arrivals and early departures are for legitimate reasons, but the effect remains the same.
