Principal’s Report
NAPLAN
By the time this email reaches you, we should be mostly through NAPLAN for this year. We have written specifically to the families of Year 3 and 5 students outlining our pride and support for these students and to keep this national test in context.
For the first time, students are able to challenge themselves against a 'branched assessment'. Much like on-line games you don't move to the higher levels until you have achieved well enough at the current level. This supports all students and reduces any frustration with being exposed to many difficult questions. Students who are getting every question correct are then able to attempt the harder questions as it individualises the assessment.
NAPLAN is an important measure for schools to benchmark our important work of learning. Our community puts their trust in us to ensure students meet learning standards and we take this seriously to do as well as we can. It is one measure though and we celebrate achievement and always learn to improve.
School Review
Every school is reviewed on a four-year basis by the Education Improvement Branch. I am letting our community know that a team of three review officers will be visiting the school between Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 May. We welcome the opportunity to review our school in order to strive to be the best we can.
As part of the review, review officers may approach parents and community members around the school or in the car park. They will have identification or badges to let you know who they are.
We welcome our school review team:
- Dr Keith Graham, OAM (Internal Reviewer)
- Ms Leanne Ordorico, (Principal Kurwongbah State School)
- Mr John Wessel, (External Reviewer)
Parent Teacher Interviews
It was so wonderful to see so many families at our Parent Teacher Interviews in Week 2. Speaking with parents, carers and students it was good to hear that students were progressing well with their learning.
Some students are working on taking on greater challenge in their learning to stretch themselves. This is healthy, optimal and ensures growth.
Sometimes, students find it difficult to take risks with harder learning. This is important to ensure maximum learning achievement. One guide is that students should be able to deal with 90% of the learning and challenged with 10% of the learning. This places them in the optimum learning zone. It is perfectly fine for a student to get an answer wrong or to be shaky with a particular concept. This ensures that they are learning.
As adults, we can acknowledge students struggling with hard concepts as well as celebrating getting things correct.
Each student should have something that they are working on. Now is a good time to check in to see how they are going with this.
Domestic and Family Violence Month
May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month
Each May, we acknowledge Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month and we are reminded that all forms of domestic and family violence (DFV) is never acceptable. We all have a role to play in bringing an end to DFV. As individuals, there are actions we can all take to contribute to a culture that does not tolerate DFV.
The Queensland Government is continuing to implement strategies that support people who experience DFV and to create a culture where DFV is not tolerated.
Visit the Queensland Domestic and Family Violence website for more information and support.
Current COVID Measures – COVID Normal
The Queensland Government has announced the relaxation of some COVID measures from 4 March.
- All staff, contractors and volunteers fully vaccinated
- Face masks not required but encouraged and supported
- Mass gatherings and events can resume
- Restrictions on parents, carers and visitors eased
- All assemblies, incursions, camps and excursions can recommence
- Students who choose to wear face masks will continue to be supported
- We maintain a supply of face masks to support staff and students who request
- Anyone who is unwell or with symptoms to isolate away from school and get tested
- We maintain a supply or RATs for unwell staff and unwell students to take home
- Close contact rules have changed from 6pm on Thursday 28 April provided close contacts test negative and wear face masks may leave home.
Our community keeping everyone safe
We are all very aware that coronavirus has been and is circulating within our broader community. We acknowledge and thank many families doing the right thing in getting tested and isolating if positive. The school has a supply of RATs to be sent home with students who are referred to sick bay with symptoms. Coomera Springs families experiencing symptoms at home can access testing through HAAN Respiratory Centre (100m south of the school) or any testing centre or RAT supplier. Testing and isolating if positive is helping to reduce the spread of the virus at school.
Confirmed cases of COVID are occurring within our school community on a daily basis. Vigilance in keeping students with symptoms at home and getting tested is still the best way to contain the spread at this time. Thank you for testing and isolating if positive or close contact. This is important at this time.
Celebrate Success
We are really impressed with the achievements of our students. Students achieving well in their learning and across other areas such as sport.
We celebrate ANZAC Day Community March, Broadwater Cross Country and Kokoda Kids Event Practice in our slideshow in this newsletter.

Kind regards,
Chris McMillan

YEAR 4 MUSIC COE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT
Our Year 4 Music COE students were fortunate to be able to travel to Brisbane last week to attend a concert by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. “Lights, Camera, Action!” celebrated the 90th birthday of the master of movie music: John Williams, and featured the epic fanfares of Star Wars, the swirling magic of Harry Potter, the adventure of Indiana Jones and much, much more! We were very proud of the way our students conducted themselves on the excursion, and their enthusiasm for the experience was evident.
DATE CLAIMER: MUSIC SHOWCASE EVENING
The CSSS Music Showcase Evening will be held on Wednesday the 8th of June at 5:30pm in our school hall. This will be a very exciting evening of music and entertainment. All of our Instrumental Music Ensembles (Band and Strings) will be performing, as well as our Choirs, Ukulele Band, Drumline and Music Centre of Excellence Classes!
