Principal’s Report

National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on 26th May each year.

This day gives Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people and their communities a chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.

National Sorry Day was born out of a key recommendation made by the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families in the “Bringing Them Home Report” that was tabled in Federal Parliament on 26th May 1997, with the first National Sorry Day taking place on 26th May, 1998.

Deadlines for payment

At Coomera Springs, we have many excursions, camps and excellence opportunities for students as extensions to the learning that happens at school. While many are at no cost, we have a number that involve a cost of some sort. You will notice that we need to have a deadline for payment, which determines the students who will participate in that particular activity.

To be fair to all families, we need to cut off participation into the activity after the deadline has passed. You may also discuss payment options, however this must be done prior to the deadline.

Thank you for your understanding by paying any student activities (or making contact to discuss options) prior to the advertised deadline.

Pride in our Year 3 and Year 5 Students

We are very proud of our Year 3 and Year 5 students for their participation in NAPLAN. Our Year 3 and Year 5 teachers taught the curriculum well and supported students through the NAPLAN week. Our students worked to the very best of their ability and should feel proud of their achievements. Many students enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate what they know, and found the test materials quite interesting.

Testing and challenges are part of our life. It is great that students showed grit and resilience in completing NAPLAN, and they are to be congratulated. We expect NAPLAN student reports to arrive around September.

Creating Bright Futures Together with students setting goals and challenging by having a Growth Mindset!

We continue a short focus on the innovating work happening at Coomera Springs to support learning for all students. Students grow by being appropriately challenged. Teachers help students to identify their current levels and what they need to work on to get to the next level. Students love seeing how they can achieve and grow as young people.

We encourage our students to have a Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset is changing our thinking so that we can achieve what we work towards. We do not believe that students are limited in their potential or that intelligence is fixed at birth. Every day, humans reach further or achieve greater than before; our current Olympians set new records way beyond what was thought possible fifty years ago.

At school, our students complete pre-tests of work yet to be learnt, to help guide them towards their next learning step. They learn to be happy that this is where they are at this time, and in two weeks or ten weeks' time, they learn more, and feel proud of their achievement.

For us as adults, we may have grown up in a world where people believed in a fixed mindset.

Please click the links below to access resources to assist understanding of a Growth Mindset.

Your Brain is Like a Muscle (5 minute video)

The Magic of Mistakes (5 minute video)

The Incredible Power of Yet (5 minutes)

Growth Mindset resources (Classroom Dojo) - All suitable for children.

We learn in the power of the word, 'YET'. Students learn that it is okay to not be able to do something YET. This gives us the opportunity to learn, achieve and reach greater heights.

Date Claimer: Music Showcase Evening

The CSSS Music Showcase Evening will be held on Wednesday 9th June at 5:30pm in our school hall. This will be a very exciting evening of music and entertainment. All of our Instrumental Music Ensembles (Band and Strings) will be performing, as well as our Junior Choir, Ukulele Band, Drumline and Music Centre of Excellence Classes! This is a great opportunity for parents of potential Instrumental Music students to come along and see what the program has to offer. Our whole school community is invited to come along and enjoy some wonderful entertainment!

School Musical 2021 – The Rocky Monster Show!

Rehearsals for the musical are now in full swing, with the whole cast busily learning songs and dances and the lead actors working on 4 scenes so far! We are very happy with how the Musical is progressing.

Colouring and Poster Design Competitions

If your child is a budding artist who would like to see their work featured in the Rocky Monster Show Progam and/or promotional Posters, please encourage them to enter the CSSS Musical Colouring Competition or the CSSS Musical Poster Design Competition. These competitions are open to ALL students (you don’t have to be in the Musical to enter). The Colouring Competition is great for our younger students, and we are hoping some of our older students will take on the challenge of submitting an original Poster Design! All entries must be submitted to Mrs Raffin before the end of Week 9. Winners will be announced at the end of term, and there are prizes to be won! Please contact your child’s class teacher to obtain an entry form, or for further information on how your child can enter the Colouring/Poster Design Competition.

Music Shirts

Our performing ensembles look amazing in their Music shirts. If your child is in Band, Strings or Choir now is the time to order your Music Shirt for 2021 – available from School Locker. Music Shirts can be worn to school on Thursdays in 2021.

Information from General Meeting held on 12th May 2021

At the recent meeting, discussion was held regarding fundraising ideas for the school. Below are some of the suggestions.

  • Bingo or Trivia Nights
  • Bunnings Sausage Sizzles
  • Lamington, Fruit, Pie Drives
  • Fete/Fair
  • Outdoor movie night

Previously, a Fete was held every second year and due to COVID-19 last year this did not occur. The next Fete is proposed for 2022.

The Executive Committee have had the opportunity to request participation with Bunnings at one of their Community Sausage Sizzles. Our request has been submitted and we are waiting confirmation if successful. More information will be communicated when a date is known.

To enable these events to be run successfully, the P&C will need to establish a Fundraising Committee. If you have, or know someone who has the expertise in assisting and becoming part of the fundraising team, please let the Executive know. We all know that many hands can make the task easier. Should you be interested in volunteering your time to assist, please let us know at the above email. Our vision is that this committee meet separately to the general meetings, over a cuppa before, during or after school. A report will then be presented at the general meeting.

Again, please let the Executive know if you are interested.

Change of date for next General Meeting

Due to a school event (Musical Showcase) taking place when the next meeting was scheduled to be held, it was decided at the last meeting to move our June meeting to 23rd June 2021. Same time, same place.

Thanks everyone and please stay safe.
