Principal’s Report
Focus on students throughout 2020
We are getting into our new normal set of procedures at Coomera Springs during Term 3. Our students have adapted quickly and very much appear to be coping well. Our Coomera Springs team remains focused on this year being as good as it can be for every student. Here are some updates for our community.
Health and safety first
We continue to work together to take every precaution as we work to keep COVID – 19 at bay. Our staff have been staying home when unwell and large numbers have been tested. Our families are keeping students at home when unwell or with even mild symptoms, and we continue to implement changed guidelines to keep our community safe and healthy.
Student attendance: All students should now be in attendance at school unless for a medical reason. We are recommencing our normal practice to follow up on student attendance.
Unwell students: The directive continues that any student who is unwell must not attend school.
Adult social distancing: It remains important that parents do not gather before or after school, in the car park, at drop off and pick up time, outside classrooms or at the school gate.
Parent involvement at school: We have commenced live streaming school assemblies and also live streamed our athletics carnival last week. We will do the same for our Book Week Parade in Week 7. Our hope is to help support parents and family members at this time when spectators are not permitted.
Parent FAQ: Please see these COVID Frequently Asked Questions for parents
This does take the cooperation of every individual person doing their bit and we are grateful to everyone as we get through this together.
Learning continues
We are ensuring the curriculum is well covered during the year and where necessary adjustments made for the time when students were learning from home. Our assessment results give us great confidence that our students will not have their 2020 learning impacted.
Excellence events, sport, camps, excursions and incursions are gradually restarting
A number of school events, camps, excursions, graduation and incursions have recently been held or are planned throughout the remainder of the year. I commend our wonderful staff who have worked on additional risk assessments, activity adjustments and COVID-Safe plans to ensure that these events can occur. Of course, we must continue to follow the guidelines at the time, and these are subject to change.
We have recently been able to hold our Athletics Carnivals and have Born to Read – Book Week, Footsteps to Fame and Book Fair coming up. These are all operating without spectators, and will be live streamed where possible.
We can’t change what is happening in 2020, but we work together to ensure that all students continue to belong and be happy at school, continue to learn at high levels and continue to grow as wonderful young people.
Student drop off and pick up
Road safety around the school needs to be the highest priority for everyone. The school has good options for student drop off and pick up with pedestrian loading zones being clearly marked. These are available in the second bay alongside Old Coach Road and also within the rear carpark. Drivers who drop off or collect students in non-designated areas increase safety concerns. Please use the pedestrian loading zones and ensure students only cross where there are pedestrian crossings. This is a safety priority for all.
Notice of student free day - Friday 4 September
Please note that Friday 4 September is a student free day on the Queensland School Calendar. The school will be closed for students on this day and staff will be involved in professional development and meetings. Camp Australia may operate and will notify parents.
Excellence at Coomera Springs
This week we celebrate our Week 5 Athletics Carnivals.

News from the Chaplain
In the last Chappy News we talked about cyber safety and how to keep our children safe. I thought we could highlight KINDNESS today – kindness when accessing and using technology.
Let’s chat to our children about KINDNESS when using technology, and ask the following questions:
- Have I been mean to someone online? That’s NOT kind.
- Have I been teasing someone and taken it too far? That’s NOT kind.
Think about how you want others to treat you online:
- Do I want others to be mean to ME?
- Do I want others to tease ME and take it too far?
Remember, nobody deserves or likes to be bullied or treated meanly online – it can hurt our feelings and change the way we think about ourselves.
Remember to:
- Think before you say or post something online: is it KIND?
- Don’t forward or encourage mean messages – it’s NOT kind.

P&C NEWS
Dear Parents and Carers,
We hope that all the families and friends of the CSSS community are safe and well.
Tuckshop
It's great to hear that the tuckshop is catering for more orders now that things are back to some degree of normal. Your patronage is very much appreciated. With your assistance we are able to maintain and improve upon our variety of menu items. The turnover is also helping us maintain and improve our facilities and equipment. We will keep you updated on any improvements in this regard.
Uniforms
The uniform shop has some items of clothing available at discounted prices as a result of the change of ownership which occurred last year. There are limited items in a variety of sizes, including cargo pants, jackets, boys shirts and music polos. If you are interested, please drop in and see Ange or Vivienne at the tuckshop and they will be happy to show you what is available.
Fundraising
We are in regular discussions with the school about how best to support our children by utilising money raised through fundraising activities. Our aim is to build an undercover walkway in areas of greatest student need, and we hope to make a start on these improvements soon. Thank you for your support in making this happen.
Father’s Day
Our next event is Father's Day and we have a few events planned. We will be organising a raffle with some great prizes on offer and ticket prices kept to a minimum. Ticket books will be sent home with students shortly and any unsold tickets should be returned to the Tuckshop for recycling.
We will also be holding a Father’s Day Stall in the Tuckshop area with a range of items at varied prices, including mystery gifts, which were a great success during Mother's Day this year. Please be aware the Father’s Day Stall is for students only and during school hours. Unfortunately no parents will be able to attend due to current restrictions.
Fundraising Ideas
If you have ideas for other types of fundraising activities, please contact us on either email address listed below. We look forward to your support and thank all volunteers who have assisted the P&C.
Communication
We are aiming to provide effective and clear communication through means such as this newsletter, the school Facebook page, website and flyers being sent home with students. We are currently identifying ways to improve communication with the community and hope to implement these in the near future.

A message from Gold Coast Oral Health Services
As part of Gold Coast Health COVID-19 response, we will temporarily be ceasing the operations of all dental units located in schools in our region, effective immediately.
This decision to temporarily cease services has not been made lightly.
We plan to leave the mobile units on site in the schools ready to recommence when we are given the directive to do so.
