Principal’s Report
Welcome back to all students
As we welcome back all of our students this week, we send our gratitude to parents and carers who have been assisting with home learning since the start of Term 2.
It is wonderful to see the faces of young people that we have not seen for up to eight weeks. They have settled back into school routine after a period when their learning was flipped. I congratulate our students for their resilience during this period.
Looking back on this time, there is no doubt that there were many challenges and the pandemic continues to create great concern for health and economic impacts. To build resilience, students learn to be grateful for things in their lives. For most of us, this period has been an opportunity to reflect and be grateful for things that we may have previously taken for granted. Most students are grateful for their friends at school, their classmates and their teachers. They will be grateful for the extended time spent with family members and how important these relationships are to them. Many have also taken on extra responsibilities with pets or even have new fur babies to look after. We have students who enjoyed a number of aspects of home learning and became grateful for many aspects of our lives that we previously took for granted. We draw upon some of the work of the Resilience Project to assist us as adults and assist young people to build resilience in one of the most challenging times in global history. The below short video may help families help their young people in building resilience in their lives.
Teachers have been focused this week on re-establishing their class, teaching our routines and our new routines for COVID – 19 as well as re-establishing those important relationships. We have already identified that there are many cross curriculum priorities, 21st Century skills and digital technology skills that students have made great improvement in over the past five weeks. Teachers will check in with learning and work together to make progress on curriculum expectations, so that recently made gains in learning can be maintained for the remainder of the year.
This has been an exceptional period in history. Now, we work together to re-establish high standards for our students, in dress, behaviour and meeting expectations at school to continue their 2020 learning journey.
COVIDSAFE requirements at school
We work together to protect our students and staff at school as well as our families in our school community. We have made many changes in readiness for students returning to school-based learning. We have increased our cleaning and sanitation of basins, sinks, bubblers and high touch areas at the school. We explicitly teach and encourage frequent hand washing and recommended cough and sneeze practices. Our staff as well as our students are expected to stay home if unwell and our staff are encouraged to be tested if they have any symptoms. From 11th May, we have implemented new procedures for student drop off and collection away from class areas. We have also cancelled all assemblies, camps, sports days, arts events, performances and interschool activities. Physical education has been permitted to recommence with certain conditions in place.
We also have plans in place in collaboration with our department and the Department of Health should there be a positive COVID – 19 case in our school community. In these circumstances, we ask parents to monitor our critical communication methods of email and SMS messages.
We thank our school community for helping us with these new procedures that enable the school to re-open safely for school-based learning.
National Sorry Day
This week, we commemorate National Sorry Day.
National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on 26th May each year.
This day gives Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people and their communities a chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
National Sorry Day was born out of a key recommendation made by the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, in the Bringing them home Report that was tabled in Federal Parliament on 26 May 1997, with the first National Sorry Day taking place on May 26, 1998.
At Coomera Springs State School we recognise and acknowledge the Stolen Generations. We acknowledge this is a time of healing and may have people in our community that have been impacted and for that we are truly sorry.
Excellence at Coomera Springs State School
Our scheduled excellence activities cannot happen at this time. We continue to acknowledge the excellence that is occurring in other ways at this different time including …
- All of our students who have transitioned back to school-based learning with excitement, looking forward to joining their classes and to see their friends.
- All of our parents and carers who juggled home-based learning at a challenging time for everyone. You stuck with this and created deep family bonds for life.
- Our students who have reflected on their gratitude for many aspects of life that were previously taken for granted. These items of gratitude are uplifting and heart-felt.
- Our entire school community who have stuck together during one of the most challenging times in our lifetimes. Thank you!!!!
Welcome back students!!!

Chappy News
It’s wonderful having the students back at school – what a “buzz” and energy we have at school! So many students told me they couldn’t wait to see their friends and teachers again. Many students were really excited about playing on the oval again! I saw students running around laughing and excited – a wonderful start to the week!
Of all the students I “interviewed”, everyone told me they missed their friends. Friendships are important to both children and adults. I often have chats to students about their friendships. Everyone wants a good friend but we have to also remind ourselves to BE a good friend. Here are ways we can treasure and value our friendships by being a good friend:
- Listen, really listen to your friends
- Encourage them
- Be kind and helpful
- Cheer them up
- Stick up for them
- Forgive them when they’ve hurt your feelings
Friends are important, let’s value our friends and be good friends to each other.
