Principal’s Report

Reading is My Superpower | Book Week 2019

What can you take to the beach, on a plane or to a riverside camp that helps you escape and does not need charging?

Yes, the answer is a book!

In this day and age, students have multiple ways to be entertained and informed but the ability to read a book remains as important as ever. Some children come to school knowing how to swipe and tap but are yet to be able to carefully turn a page.

This week, we celebrate Book Week, incorporating our Book Parade and Born to Read. When we read a book, we can use our imagination to interpret the words on the page to take us to other worlds. Reading really is my superpower!

Happy Book Week!

NAIDOC Celebrations – Voice Treaty Truth

The foundation staff and families of Coomera Springs State School spent time to ensure links occurred from our long indigenous culture and language within our present Australian culture and language. This is demonstrated within the school badge and house names. One of our special guests invited all Australians to embrace indigenous culture within our own Australian culture. This is the reason we celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Congratulations to all staff, families and students for a wonderful NAIDOC week of activities and a very special NAIDOC assembly last week.

Front Car Park

Families and visitors are reminder that the front car park is a designated public road. This means that driving rules and following signage is enforceable by enforcement officers such as the Queensland Police Service. The signage is clear and placed there by Gold Coast City Council for the safety of students.

Please be aware that the QPS are not obliged to consider reasons or give warnings for not following the marked signage and may patrol this public road space at any time.

Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

Students Achieving Excellence at Coomera Springs

Third Party Website/Applications

The use of web based educational resources has risen steadily over the last decade. Teachers are increasingly using these resources across Queensland to improve student-learning outcomes.

Our school and teachers make decisions about the best technology to meet the needs of our students. While the Department provides most of the resourcing we use at school, sometimes a need exists that are not included. On these occasions, it is beneficial for students to utilise services provided by third party web-based providers.

Coomera Springs State School wishes to utilise the third-party web based service providers listed below to aid students learning. For your child to use these services, their teacher will need to register them as a user. Registering with these providers requires student personal information to be disclosed to the provider of the service. Registration may include disclosing the following information about your student:

  • Student Name
  • Year group
  • Class Teacher
  • Student Education Queensland email address

In the case of the services outlined below, they are private companies that are hosted onshore in Australia and/or outside of Australia. Outside of Australia means that data which is entered to register for these sites will be stored on servers that are not based in Australia and therefore are not bound by Queensland’s privacy laws.

We need your permission for the registration and use of these sites by your child. You will receive a consent form during week 6, please complete the form and return it to your child’s teacher.

Note: It is not compulsory for you to provide this consent – If you decide not to provide consent, this will not adversely affect academic achievement or any relationships with teachers or the school.

Before you complete this consent form it is important that you understand the reasons that these websites collect this information, what will be done with it, who may have access to it and where the data is stored. This information can be downloaded below, referring to each website’s terms and conditions and/or privacy policy.

Please read these and ensure that you understand the implications of using this service before giving your consent. If you have any queries around the storage of student’s information, please feel free to contact the Principal. Please note, given the significance that these services provide, the school will contact you to discuss your reasons should you not consent or fail to provide a response.

1:1 Student iPad Program Information Session

Our next 1:1 Student iPad Parent Information Session will be held on the 12th September 2019 at 3:30pm in the library. Please join us to find out all you need to know regarding the program, device specifications and have any questions answered.

Target audience for this event is Prep families transitioning to Year 1 in 2020 and any other families that wish to know more about 1:1 Student iPad Program.

Device Use on School Grounds

As we are well into Term 3, it is timely to remind our school community that students only use digital devices during class times, while at home or off school grounds. Students are welcome to request administration staff to contact parents/carers if necessary.

As recorded in our school’s responsible behaviour plan, students are not to use devices to call, message or facetime parents. As part of our weekly behaviour lessons, class teachers will remind students of these behaviours and the expectations clarified.

Uniform Standards

Coomera Springs State School has always had a great reputation within our school community for our students wearing their uniform proudly. As we approach the middle of the year it is timely to ensure that all students and parents are aware of our school dress code.

A copy of the school dress code can be found on our school website or you can download the link below.

This easy to follow guide illustrates how our school uniform is worn correctly.

If you are required to purchase uniform items, the uniform shop operating hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 8.00am – 10.30am.

Our school has developed a monitoring program to ensure all students are adhering to the school dress code. For uniform code breaches, students will receive a warning from their class teacher. This will be recorded on a class checklist. If there is a repeat breach, then an email will be sent home seeking parent/caregiver assistance to help their child have the appropriate uniform. If the breach occurs a third time, this will incur a play break consequence for the student.

Teachers consider extenuating circumstances as to why the uniform is incorrect. It is important that if parents/caregiver receive an email that they respond if the uniform cannot be rectified immediately.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s uniform, please contact the class teacher.

Coomera Springs State School - 1:1 iPad Program - Parent iPad Insurance Guide

Check your iPads AppleCare+ Insurance Cover Status

Parents can confirm the status of their iPads AppleCare insurance cover at any-time by entering the iPads Serial Number at the website below:

Please keep any shown AppleCare expiry dates written down for your own reference.

https://checkcoverage.apple.com/au/en/

Note: if the above link doesn’t open correctly, please Copy the link and paste it in a different web browser (e.g Safari, Google Chrome, FireFox)

Or alternatively, you can simply type “Check Applecare” in Google to reach the above website. - If no AppleCare cover is present, it means your iPads AppleCare insurance has expired

Check your iPads CompNow Tablet Insurance Cover Status (if applicable)

For those families who purchased the optional 3yr CompNow Tablet Insurance cover for their iPad purchase, you may check your remaining cover status via the website below:

https://www.compnow.com.au/customer-dashboard/

  • Simply click “Make an Insurance Claim” and type your iPad serial number
  • If no insurance cover is present BUT you did purchase the 3yr CompNow insurance with your iPad Bundle, please email your classroom teacher. Your classroom teacher will forward your request to the school’s I.T. department, who will in turn, investigate this and assist with rectifying any discrepancy.
  • Also please note, if it has been 3 years since your date of purchase – your insurance cover will have expired.

How to find your iPad Serial Number

  1. On your iPad - Go to Settings App > click the General tab > click the About tab.
  2. Look for your device's Serial Number.
  3. Make note of the number.

Parent 1:1 iPads – Warranty/Accidental Damage Process:

The school can assist families who have active AppleCare insurance AND/OR active CompNow Tablet insurance, if accidental damage or warranty issues are present on the student’s iPad.

If you have checked your insurance status AND you would like the school to assist with lodging a claim; simply notify your classroom teacher regarding any accidental damage or hardware faults present on your iPad.

The classroom teacher will forward your request to the School’s I.T. Department.

The School’s I.T. Department will then investigate your claim and will contact you.

If your iPad is covered under AppleCare OR CompNow tablet insurance, the school will advise you on the cost of replacement, timeframes and back up procedure. The school may also communicate to you to Sign out of iCloud prior to claim lodgement (if applicable).

No claims can be submitted if iCloud is signed in to a parents Apple ID. iCloud must be Signed out first – this must be done by the parent/owner of the Apple ID.

For parent reference - the school utilises CompNow (Apple Authorised Reseller) as our main handler for AppleCare insurance claims.

The school simply acts as a lodgement centre and delivery point for your claim. The school does not receive payments for lodged insurance claims. Any lodged claims will be invoiced to the parent directly (via email) from CompNow who handles the actual claim and replacement of iPads.

The school makes no money by offering this service to families. All financial transactions are between you and CompNow (vendor).

Accidental Insurance Cost transparency – school lodged AppleCare claims will cost parents (Apple’s Service fee – subject to $65 and the CompNow’s Courier fee – including delivery from the school and return delivery to the school of iPad - $19) = $84 total will be invoiced to you from CompNow for a new iPad.

CompNow insurance claims cost – parents will simply pay the insurance excess as highlighted in the insurance policy ($100 + $19 courier fee) = $119 total will be invoiced to you from CompNow for a new iPad

For iPads covered under AppleCare insurance – a total of 2 claims can be made over the 2 year period of cover. This is an Apple policy, not CompNow or the Schools. Please refer to the below Apple website for reference. Your AppleCare insurance cover starts from date of purchase. The insurance window is present for 2 years from date of purchase.

https://www.apple.com/au/support/products/ipad.html

Parent 1:1 iPads – Warranty/Accidental Damage Process (Continued)

  1. Parents also have the option to directly take their iPads into to an Apple Store (located at Robina or Carindale). Please remember to check your AppleCare status before making the journey. Refer to information earlier in this document which highlights this process.
  2. If your iPad serial number is covered under AppleCare insurance, Apple will be more than happy to process your claim and replace the iPad in store.
  3. Again, they will charge you the $65 Apple Service fee for the new iPad.

Please Note:

Any new iPad received or processed through AppleCare/CompNow insurance, MUST be delivered to the School’s I.T. Department. The new iPad will be enrolled back into the School’s iPad Management System so our School apps to be redeployed to the device. If applicable, any “Home” apps can be reinstalled for free via the App Store using the Apple ID previously associated to the original iPad. This process can be done when the new iPad returns home with the student.

If you have any doubts, please email your child’s teacher. The classroom teacher will forward your correspondence to the school’s I.T. Department.
