Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome to Term Three. I hope you all had a relaxing winter vacation and enjoyed your time with family. The weather was definitely kind to us with just a touch of winter in the air.

Report Cards

By this stage all report cards have been emailed home. I hope you have taken the time to read through these and to share the reports with your children. The Semester One report is a great indication of just how your child is travelling academically, socially and emotionally.

If you have any questions or concerns, please make contact with your child’s teacher to discuss these.

Your Administration Team

You will be seeing a new face in our administration team from week 3. We will have Mrs Petrina Lewis joining the team here at Coomera Springs as one of our Deputy Principals. Mrs Lewis comes to us from Burleigh Heads State School, and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience. We are really excited to welcome Mrs Lewis to our team and school.

Just in case you are a little confused, here is the breakdown of our leadership team:

Principal – Mrs Martine Gill
P-1 Deputy Principal – Mrs Gabby Raffin
2-3 Deputy Principal – Mrs Petrina Lewis
4-6 Deputy Principal – Mr Ben Morris
HOSES – Mrs Connie McLean
Pedagogical Coach – Mrs Tania Pritchett

In our upcoming newsletters we will share with you a small profile on ourselves so you get to know each of us that little bit more.

School Opinion Survey

Each year Education Queensland asks for your participation in what is called the School Opinion Survey. Normally there is a formula for the selection of parents, however, this year Coomera Springs is part of a trial program, so the whole school community will be asked to participate. Information will be sent home that includes what this is all about, log in details etc. The portal does not open until 31 July, so we will send any information we have home to you closer to this date. Whilst it is not mandatory for you to participate in the survey, we would really appreciate if you could provide your feedback. We also have staff and older students provide feedback.

We receive the results later in the year and we use this information as part of our platform for some of the decisions we make here at Coomera Springs. Results are also included in our School Annual Report which can be accessed via our school website.

We have traditionally performed very well in the School Opinion Survey and I know this sounds biased, but I believe it is because this really is a great school and we do work hard to provide every opportunity for our students to develop in a holistic manner and to experience success within this.

Student Safety

The safety of our students is and will always be paramount. I have included countless articles in our newsletters regarding the use of the school carpark. Whilst I definitely acknowledge that the carpark is incredibly hectic at school pick up time, the fact that a great portion of parents continue to break the rules is not assisting any person in this situation. Another important factor here is that as part of our community, being able to stay calm in the face of frustration is an expectation. Our students should not be exposed to poorer and aggressive behaviours and that has happened. So when I am on gate duty and I do witness this, yes I will step in and that action comes from my responsibility to protect our students.

But once again I ask you as the parents of our community to remember that safety is key. You make the decisions behind the wheel of your car, please make them safe decisions

School Musical

This term our school will be showcasing its third school musical. These productions are honestly spectacular. To see our primary students on stage and performing is one of those ‘catch my breath’ moments as a Principal. But I would really like to acknowledge the team of teachers who have put in countless hours that are above and beyond their teaching load. Mrs Alison Murray has been the organiser behind all of this, but we have a strong and committed team of teachers who have taken on jobs such as choreography, costumes, set designs and painting. A school musical is a massive undertaking, so thank you to the dedicated people of Coomera Springs.

I can’t wait for the performance nights and to see all of our families there. So make sure you mark September 8 and 9 on your calendars.

Kind Regards

Martine Gill

Rowing Program

In 2015 our school started an indoor Rowing Program with the assistance of Sporting School Australia. We are the only State Primary school in Australia that runs such a program. Our team of approximately 25 students train twice per week on our five ergo machines and other fitness equipment. We have invested in the most up to date technology and coaching principals to provide this opportunity to our Coomera Springs students. We have three coaches – Miss Talbot, Mr Harvey and Mr Dempsey-Ceh, also with Mrs Hodder who runs the program and budget requirements.

Since its inception, the program participants have been on and excursion to an indoor Rowing centre in Brisbane and toured the rowing sheds of Brisbane Boys Grammar School, they have also participated in two incursions where specialist coaches have visited our team. Two students from 2016 competed in the Australian Indoor Rowing Championships and achieved outstanding results. They both placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their events.

Our school works closely with Rowing QLD and Rowing Australia and together we are developing more exciting rowing excursions for the future.

NAIDOC Week

The 12th July 2017 saw our school celebrate and acknowledge Australian Indigenous culture. Students from Prep to Year 6 all participated in lessons outlining the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language in their respective cultures. From Student Council

With the upcoming Book Week and our very own Born to Read event, the Student Council have formulated a great idea to raise some much needed funds for our school. We are going to be running a Coomera Springs Book Drive. Students are encouraged to bring in any unwanted books from home that they may have out grown or no longer read. These books will then be sold at BORN TO READ to our school community by our Student Council representatives. This is not only a great way to encourage reading but to create new memories through sharing stories.

Donations can be made through the school office starting Monday week 6 (14th August) and will conclude Friday week 8 (31st August). The books donated will be sold week 10 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. The class who has sold the most books will win a prize. The winner will be announced Thursday week 10.

HoSES News

Welcome back to Term 3 everyone.

We hope that everyone had a wonderful break with their families and we look forward to working together this term to enhance all our student’s learning!

This term our school will once again participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Students with a Disability (NCCD). This has been a practice that has been implemented state and nation wide for the last few years. Part of our responsibility is that we advise you that we will be completing this data collection. I have included some detailed information below on the history and processes of the NCCD for you to peruse. If you have any questions at all please feel free to contact me.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability

Background to the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

All Education Ministers from Commonwealth, state and territory governments have endorsed the implementation of a nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability in all Australian schools (government, independent and Catholic).

The nationally consistent approach to data collection provides all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with a clear picture of the number of students receiving adjustments because of disability in schools, and the adjustments they are provided to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students.

Authority for the collection of information for the purposes of the NCCD

The Australian Education Regulation requires the operators of all government and non-government schools that receive Australian Government funding (approved authorities) to provide information to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (the Department) for the purposes of the NCCD.

The information that approved authorities must give to the Department is set out at section 58A of the Regulation. This includes, in relation to each student with a disability at a school operated by the approved authority:

  • the student’s level of education (i.e. primary or secondary)
  • the student’s category of disability (i.e. physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional)
  • the student’s level of adjustment (i.e. support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive adjustment).

The information will not explicitly identify individual students (subsection 58A(3) of the Regulation); no information that could reasonably enable the Department to identify individual students will be provided by approved authorities to the department1.

Collection, use and disclosure of NCCD information

The information collected by schools for the purposes of the 2017 NCCD will ultimately be provided to the Department. In some cases, this will involve the school passing the information directly to the Department, and in other cases the school will provide the information to its state or territory government agency (or other relevant body) in the first instance, depending on the school’s particular arrangements. In such circumstances, that state or territory government agency, or other relevant body, will then provide the information to the Department.
