Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 2, I hope that all of our families enjoyed a wonderful Easter vacation with their loved ones. It’s been exciting to return to Coomera Springs after stepping out for the past 8 months to welcome our little girl into our family, and to just enjoy the time being a mum. It’s an experience like no other, and I feel incredibly fortunate for the chance we were given in this. I would like to thank the community in supporting my very quick exit out of the school, and for making me feel incredibly supported.
I would really like to publicly thank the wonderful team who not only held everything together at our great school. But continued to improve our school in all that happens here. A very special thanks to Mr Taylor Haley for taking on the challenge of principal, and being so outstanding in this. It’s testament to not only his ability and professionalism, but to the greatness of this school.
It’s been lovely to return though and see all of the familiar faces, and meet the many new ones.
ANZAC Ceremony
On Monday 24th April, our school observed ANZAC Day with our school ceremony. Our students were simply outstanding in this assembly with exemplary behaviour, and the understanding of the importance of what was being recognised.
I would like to thank Mrs Gabby Raffin for her organisation of this ceremony. It was very professional and very special.
Thank you to all of the students who were able to represent Coomera Springs State School at the Oxenford march on ANZAC Day. You have also represented our school with honour and pride.
School Uniform
As I was sitting on the stage during our ANZAC ceremony I was able to get a collective view of all of our students looking resplendent in their uniform. I know in past newsletters I have spoken about the importance of getting this right and the reasons why. I still stand firmly in my beliefs that demonstrating pride in one’s self is as equally important as showing pride in our school through how we wear our uniform.
This extends all the way through to hairstyles, appropriate shoes etc. I appreciate there are days that it can be a battle at home getting everyone organised and wanting to get dressed for school. But I also promise that those battles are ultimately sending a strong and positive message about respect and culture to our students. So I thank our parents for your continued support in this area.
I did notice some track style haircuts popping through. Just a reminder that these hairstyles are fine for school holidays, but once school resumes, they need to be grown out.
Term 2 Happenings
Every school term is busy and brings with it some specific activities. Term 2 is no different, so please keep an eye on the calendar and read the newsletters to know what is happening and when it is happening.
At this moment we are in the throes of parent teacher interviews. Emails were sent home previously to book these online with your child’s teacher. I encourage all of you to take the time to find out exactly how your child is progressing with their learning. Your role as a partner in learning is critical to the overall success of our students. The reality is that there are only so many hours in a day and week that we get to spend with our students. You as a parent have a greater impact on ensuring that all learning is progressed in a positive manner. So if you have not made a time yet to meet with the teacher, I strongly encourage you to do so.
Later this term our first round of report cards will also be emailed home. At this stage what I need you to do is to make sure that the office has your correct email address, as this is how you will receive your child’s report card.
Parking in the Bus Lane
We still have a lot of parents illegally parking in the bus lane of our main school carpark. This is causing issues for our bus when it arrives to pick up our students. The driver cannot get through, and cannot secure a safe park. Just to remind you all that it is illegal to park in this space and yes, you are endangering the lives of our students. Please be mindful of this and the example that is being set to our students.
Kind Regards
Martine Gill
News from our Deputies
Welcome Back, I trust everyone had an enjoyable and restful Easter break. After a very busy term it was great to spend some quality time with my young family before embarking on another exciting term.
I turn my focus to looking after our Year 2's and Year 3's now that Martine has returned for leave.
Important information for students with EpiPens
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has advised that four batches of EpiPen ® 300 microgram adrenaline injection syringe auto-injectors are being recalled.
If your child’s EpiPen ® is from batch 5FA665, 5FA6651, 5FA6652 or 5FA6653 (all of which expire in April 2017), return it to your pharmacy for a free replacement or refund.
It has been identified that EpiPens ® from the four affected batches may contain a defective part that could result in the auto-injector failing to activate or needing to be applied with more force than normal to activate.
It is important to keep the current auto-injector until you get the replacement, and use it if required (being mindful that you may need to apply more force than normal to activate it).
For further information see the TGA Recall Alert:

If you have further questions or concerns, talk to your health professional.

News from our Hoses
Welcome to Term 2!
April is Autism Awareness month. Autism Spectrum Disorder, commonly known as ASD, is a complex, lifelong developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to communicate, interact with others and cope in everyday situations. Structured early intervention, therapy and education delivered by professionals with expertise in ASD can make a significant difference.
ASD will affect each person differently. Some will require lifelong support and services while other will be able to achieve academically and socially. Parents, families and carers can best support a person with ASD’s development by encouraging their strengths, skills and interests, which will help them to learn, communicate and socialise just like their friends and other people around them.
Autism Queensland provide services and support to people with autism and their families.

News from our Music Department
Instrumental Music News
Welcome back to Term 2! It was wonderful to see the majority of students at their lessons and ensemble/band rehearsals last week. Mrs Favaloro and Mrs Russell have asked me to pass on their congratulations on a greatly improved ensemble setup in Strings and Junior Band – they are very pleased with how well the students are working. This sets a good standard for the rest of the term. Last week students in the Senior Band had their first rehearsal for the year, and they are also off to a great start. Keep practicing at home and asking your Instrumental teacher if you are having any difficulties, and the new ensemble pieces will soon become easy and very enjoyable to perform.
Important message:
Can I please ask everyone to check each week that they have taken home their own instrument (and not someone else’s)? We have put name tags on each instrument (as so many look identical), so students and parents will just need to check the name - preferably before taking it home! If an incorrect instrument does make it home please return it to the school ASAP the next day, as students and parents do get worried if they cannot find their instrument. Don’t wait until your next lesson day to sort out this mistake!
Junior Choir
Congratulations to the Junior Choir on a super performance at the Easter Hat Parade last week – we loved seeing and hearing you perform! The Junior Choir will be learning new songs this week, so if your child in Prep – Year 2 is not in Choir yet (but wants to join) please send them along to the MUSIC ROOM on THURSDAY at FIRST PLAYTIME.
School Musical – KIDS AT SEA!
The Musical Cast was announced on assembly in the last week of Term 1 – congratulations to all students who have been selected! Rehearsals have now commenced, and these will be held during play breaks in Term 2. A weekly rehearsal schedule will be emailed to parents and teachers, so students can plan ahead for each upcoming week. Students in the musical have also received a very important contract from Mrs Gill (on red paper) which is to be signed by Parents and Students, and must be returned to Mrs Murray by the end of next week (Friday 5th May).
I was very impressed with the efforts of the Musical Cast in singing the song for our school’s Anzac Ceremony on Monday – you did an amazing job, and I am very proud of all of you!
Music Shirts
Our performing ensembles look amazing in their Music Shirts. If your child is in Band, Strings or Choir now is the time to order your Music Shirt for 2017 – available from the uniform shop for $28. Music Shirts can be worn to school on Fridays in 2017.
Prep parents please be advised that the Music Shirts are only available from Size 6 upwards (it is not possible to make the shirt in a smaller size as the process would alter our design). Prep students in the Junior Choir should purchase a Size 6 shirt and wear it tucked into their formal bottom half.
