Principal’s Report

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Welcome to the 2nd instalment of our whole school newsletter. I hope that all of our new families and returning families have had a positive first month at Coomera Springs.

Last week and continuing throughout week 4 we have been hosting our Parent Information Sessions for each year level. I hope that where possible you have been able to attend these sessions to learn how you too can support the learning and independence of your child throughout 2017.

Always remember that if you have any concerns at any point throughout the year concerning your child’s learning, behaviour or wellbeing; please ensure that your first point of contact is the classroom teacher. Our classroom teachers are always more than happy to book a time to sit down and discuss any concerns. We also have three Deputy Principals looking after our sectors within the school, so if need be please contact them also.

Prep – Year 1: Gabby Raffin (graff1@eq.edu.au)
Year 2 – Year 3: Melissa Gurney (mgurn10@eq.edu.au)
Year 4 – Year 6: Ben Morris (bmorr133@eq.edu.au)

Attendance

The year always starts with a rush, but it’s important to remember that Every Day Counts when it comes to attendance. This year sees the introduction of a same day text messaging service should your child be away. So please ensure if you have changed your details over the break that you update our ladies in the office with the correct information. Always remember if your child is away; please notify the classroom teacher, school office or absence line ASAP or before 9:30am. Please continue to reiterate the message with your child that if they arrive before 8:35am then they are required to go directly to the undercover are where they are supervised before being released to ready themselves for class.

NAPLAN

Our Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that NAPLAN will move online from 2017 – over a two to three year roll out. This means moving NAPLAN from the current paper-based test to computer-based assessments. In 2017 Coomera Springs will be one of the piloting schools embarking on this journey. As we get closer to the NAPLAN testing time, we will continue to update and alert our community of the changes and ways in which we are best preparing our students for a successful assessment. Please click on the link below to learn a little more about what this will look like in 2017.

Annual Implementation Plan

Each year, every state school is required to formulate an Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). The purpose of this document is set the vision and focus for the upcoming year. In 2017 Coomera Springs State School has three priorities.

  • strengthening teacher capacity
  • Explicit and measureable improvement of student learning outcomes in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Building a positive and supportive environment

Every member of staff, from myself to the cleaners will be doing what we can, for us to achieve the desired outcomes from our priorities.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!

What a great response to our ‘Love Our School’ initiative. In 2017 International Book giving day coincides with Valentine’s Day and I cannot say a big enough thank you to our school community for supporting us so much. We have an office space that is overflowing we great and inspiring books for our students. As adults it’s imperative that we all share the importance or reading and importantly a love for reading, so thank you once again for supporting. We will keep the donations open for another week so please feel free to drop any new books in before the end of next week.

Car Park Safety

I mentioned this in the last newsletter, but unfortunately I feel I need to mention it again.

Car Park Safety is a real concern at Coomera Springs State School. I ask that all users of our car park follow the clearly marked sign, I ask that NO cars use or stop in the bus lane and that parents use the second lane as a 2 minute drop off zone only. A friendly reminder to all that our local road safety police unit and council parking officers will be out in force over the coming weeks.

Thank you for your help in maintaining the safest carpark environment as possible.

Microsoft Office Free Downloads

All Queensland state school students can now download multiple free copies of the latest Microsoft Office to their personal home computers and mobile devices.

Students will need to use their school email address to sign in. Students who don’t have a school login, school email account and password should contact their school's Managed Internet Service (MIS) administrator or class teacher. The teacher will help students activate their school login.

Road Safety

Walking to School

While walking to school is encouraged for school children, here are some hints for parents to follow to ensure your children enjoy a safe trip to and from school every day:

  • Where possible, walk to school with your children, especially if children are under the age of 10.
  • Arrange for another adult or a group of older friends to walk with your children.
  • Walk your children along the safest route to school and identify hazards and appropriate crossing locations along the way.

Crossing at a marked pedestrian crossing

Pedestrian Crossings are designated by road markings (either painted white lines or concrete centre islands under traffic lights) that warn motorists that a crossing is ahead, to take care and give way to pedestrians.

To use any type of crossing safely you must;

  • Walk up to the crossing
  • Stop
  • Look
  • Listen
  • Think
  • Keep looking and listening whilst crossing
  • Do not run, ride or skate across

Crossing between parked cars

Crossing the road between parked cars is not recommended. The potential for danger of being hit by a car whilst crossing between parked cars is enormous. Drivers cannot always see pedestrians (particularly small children) waiting to cross the road. Parents and children should plan their route to and from school to allow them to cross roads at the safest possible locations such as school crossings, pedestrian islands or traffic lights with pedestrian phasings.

Scooters & Cycling to school

Road safety experts recommend that children under the age of 10 should not be cycling to and from

school unaccompanied. Here are some tips for you to ensure your children get to and from school safely every day:

  • Cycle to school with your children
  • Arrange for another adult to cycle to school with your child
  • Encourage your child to ride with older children.
  • Children under 12 years can legally ride on footpaths, which is a safer option. Cyclists must give way to pedestrians
  • Always make sure that your child is wearing an approved helmet that is fitted correctly.

Day for Daniel

It was wonderful having Bruce and Denise Morcombe visit our school and spread a vital child safety message. Recognise, React and Report are three R’s that are vital to keep our young people safe. Kids need to be able to recognise when there is a threat, be able to React to that threat and also know where to and who to report that threat to. Students were informed about the clues their bodies give them when they are in danger and were provided with a number of strategies they could use to react to such a threat. Finally students were reminded that their hands let them know who to report to.

Thank you Bruce and Denise for being steadfast in your commitment to keeping our kids safe. We acknowledge the wonderful work you do and are thankful for your unwavering service to our community.

News from our Music Department

Junior Choir

Sign up Day for our Junior Choir was held on Thursday 9th February, and so far we have 70 children from Prep – Year 2 wanting to be in our 2017 Junior Choir, which is absolutely wonderful!

Parents whose children have already signed up should receive an email this week, with information about our planned performances for the year. Some students may not have heard about the Choir before the Sign up Day, but it is not too late for them to join!

If your child would like to be a part of the choir and you did not receive an email, please email Mrs Alison Murray amurr51@eq.edu.au so your child can be added to the list, and so you can receive the information email.

NB: Children who were in the Choir last year will need to sign up again if they still want to be included, as the Choir lists do not “roll over” from year to year.

Instrumental Music News

By now all students have had their first Instrumental Lessons, and should have returned their Instrumental Music paperwork. Please check your timetables for lesson and Band/String Ensemble rehearsal times and remind your children to bring the necessary equipment for their lessons.

School Musical 2017 – KIDS AT SEA!

If your child in Year 3 – 6 has missed the sign up it’s not too late, but they do need to hurry! Send Mrs Alison Murray an email amurr51@eq.edu.au so we can make sure they don’t miss out. We will be having “Audition Preparation” sessions on THURSDAYS at Second Break for the next few weeks, to learn the songs and moves for the audition. Parents should have received an information email regarding the Musical this week, so if your child has signed up and you didn’t get an email please let us know!

Our performing ensembles look amazing in their new Music Shirts. If your child is in Band, Strings or Choir now is the time to order your Music Shirt for 2017 – available from the uniform shop for $28. Music Shirts can be worn to school on Fridays in 2017.
