Principal’s Report

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Are you leaving us at the end of 2016?

We are such a transient population on the Gold Coast we may have families that will be leaving us. So if you know that you are not returning to Coomera Springs State School in 2017, could you please let the school office know (this does not include our Year 6 students transitioning to high school).

2017 Class Lists

As in the past 3 years, we will once again put our 2017 DRAFT class lists up in our tuckshop area on Wednesday 7th, Thursday the 8th and Friday the 9th. These will be put up before school until around 9:00am. I must remind parents that these lists are draft and that we will make no changes to them, if you are concerned, please email us, but it’s important to understand we won’t be moving students on these days.

Unfortunately you are not able to take photographs of these lists as the first name and surname of each student is printed and the privacy act prohibits the use of photography.

Due to the fact that these lists are in DRAFT, you will need to come and check them again on Day 1 of the 2017 school year.

Coomera Springs State School Mo Bro’s 2017

This November 14 of our male staff are raising awareness for men’s health by participating in Movember. Throughout November you may see the male teachers rocking some glorious facial hair all in the name of charity. We will be holding a fundraiser on the 22nd November where the students will be able to get a Mo of their choice painted on by one of the Mo Bro’s for a gold coin donation. We are also selling raffle tickets to go in the draw to win a Manper (male hamper) with goods and prizes to the value of $500. Keep an eye out for them at the front of the school Monday, Wednesday & Friday’s before school or outside the tuckshop. Unfortunately due to legal reasons we are only able to sell tickets to people over the age of 18, therefore parents will have to come in to purchase them.

If you want to donate directly to the Coomera Springs State School Movember page follow the link below. We all appreciate every donation as it all supports men’s health.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Relay Baton unveiled

On Sunday 20th November, I was fortunate to be invited as our School Ambassador for the GC2018 Commonwealth Games, to the Queens Baton Relay unveiling at Jupiter’s Casino in Broadbeach.

This day also marks 500 days until the GC2018 Commonwealth Games begins.

Also in attendance was Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Chairman, Peter Beattie AC, Commonwealth Games Federation Regional Vice President Oceania, Hugh Graham, Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, and City of Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate.

Made using macadamia wood and recycled plastic sourced from Gold Coast beaches and waterways, the Baton’s design was inspired by the Gold Coast’s vibrancy, indigenous heritage and with sustainability in mind. Minister for the Commonwealth Games, Stirling Hinchliffe MP said “Local Company Designworks now have their footprint on the world, with their baton set to travel 230,000 kilometers around the globe in the lead up to the Games.”

The 288-day baton journey will begin at Buckingham Palace on 13 March 2017 during Commonwealth Day celebrations, when the Queen places her message within the Baton.

The Baton’s first port of call from London is Sierra Leone. During its global journey, thousands of baton bearers will carry the Queen’s Baton over 230,000km as it makes its way through the six Commonwealth regions of Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Landing in Australia on December 2017, the Baton will spend 100 days travelling through every state and territory before finishing its journey at the GC2018 Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018. Students can follow the journey of the Baton on the GC2018 website.

Like the other 112 Gold Coast Schools, Coomera Springs State School students participate in activities and events leading up to the Commonwealth Games. Earlier this year I took some of our student leaders to an event on Commonwealth Day at the Gold Coast Arts Center. In classrooms, students have the opportunity to communicate and digitally interact with students in other commonwealth countries.

News from our Librarian

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for all your support this year in creating a lovely reading environment for your children in the library. Through Book Club and Book Fair, we were able to buy nearly $3700 worth of new books and resources for your child to read or use to support their learning in class lessons.

Please remember all borrowing has now finished. Can you please make sure your child has returned their library book and home readers this week. Let me know if there are any problems. Reminders will be sent to the classes on Monday for those who still have outstanding items.

Thank you again for your support and see you next year.

Happy Reading,

Sue Marriott.
