U2B Extension Program

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing the very best education for every student at Coomera Springs, I am delighted to announce the introduction of our new Academic Extension Program. At Coomera Springs we recognise the need to meet the diverse academic needs of all of our students and the Academic Extension Program is focused on providing learning opportunities for students that extend beyond the regular classroom.

Through careful analysis of assessment data, and in consultation with classroom teachers, we have identified students who would benefit in being part of our Academic Extension Program. Students have been selected on the basis that they are at an academic level which allows them to miss some class time in order to work at a higher, more challenging level. Students will need to catch up on anything they miss if it is part of an assessment task to ensure all learning tasks are completed within the prescribed timeframe.

The Program will provide enrichment opportunities for students to further their academic abilities by engaging in extension learning in literacy and numeracy. The learning environment will be intellectually challenging and designed to motivate students to extend their knowledge, understanding and application, and enhance their learning skills. Mrs Jacqueline Rooks who is a highly accomplished experienced teacher is driving this exciting program.

Coomera Springs State School Mo Bro's 2017

This November, 14 of our male staff are raising awareness for men's health by participating on Movember. Throughout November you may see the male teachers rocking some glorious facial hair all in the name of charity. We will be holding a fundraiser on the 22nd November where the students will be able to get a Mo of their choice painted on by one of the Mo Bro's for a gold coin donation. We will also being selling raffle tickets to go in the draw to win a Manper (male hamper). Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook and through emails for more information on where you can purchase the raffle tickets.

If you are wanting to donate directly to the Coomera Springs State School Movember page follow the link below. We all appreciate every donation as it all supports men's health.

Class Preferences for 2017

As I mentioned last fortnight in our newsletter, it's that time of the year when our teachers begin the long process of organising class structures and lists for 2017.

Over the last few years we have changed our process slightly in that we have made our class lists available in the final few days of Term 4. This will again occur in 2016. It's very important to understand that our structures and class placements are only in DRAFT. Our staffing model is not finalised until the 8th day of the new school year. Before this point we work solely on predications, so in turn this means change is always possible.

Each year we offer our parents the opportunity to request friendship placements. You can once again do this and send them through to me on thale22@eq.edu.au or alternatively you can hand deliver a letter to the office addressed to Taylor Haley.

Also, please remember that the requests are only for friendship groupings and you cannot request a particular teacher. Teacher requests are not considered in this process.

Parent requests will close on Friday 4th November.

Are you leaving us at the end of 2016?

We are such a transient population on the Gold Coast and we may have families leaving us. So if you know that you are not returning to Coomera Springs State School in 2017, could you please let the school office know (this does not include our Year 6 students transitioning to high school).

School Fete

Last Friday our school celebrated the 2016 School Fete. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our unbelievable P&C executive team and their merry band of tireless volunteers. For those of you that attended I'm sure you would all agree that the evening was a huge success.

It's important to remember that our entire P&C team are volunteers and that they are working long and at times stressful hours to support the Coomera Springs community. A special thanks to Mrs Sharon Sharp, Mrs Keli Cowey and Mrs Renee Tobin for all of their efforts.

It would be remiss of me to not mention the outstanding support we have received from;

  • Ray White Upper Coomera
  • Autobarn Upper Coomera
  • Amcal Chemist
  • Sensational Slushees
  • Mr Mark Boothman
  • Mr Burt Van Manen
  • Mrs Donna Gates

The students and staff of Coomera Springs thank you.

Awards, Christmas Concerts and Graduation Events

Term 4 marks a time in the year for many celebrations. Please add these important dates to your calendar.

  • Tuesday 29th of November - Christmas Concerts
  • Monday 5th of December - Junior and Senior Award Ceremonies
  • Monday 5th of December – Year 6 Graduation Dinner
  • Wednesday 7th of December – Year 6 Final Roll Call

Coomera Springs Behaviour Committee

Parents are valuable partners in supporting the school and their child's learning and behaviour. Parents have valuable insights about how to best support their child's behaviour and learning. The Coomera Springs Positive Behaviour for Learning Committee is seeking a parent of the school to join our committee. If you would be interested in nominating yourself please email Taylor Haley at thale22@eq.edu.au

Staffing Change

Dave has been successful in picking up the Acting Principal position at Shailer Park State School. This position starts on the 7th of November and will continue until the end of 2017.

I thank Dave for everything that he has brought to Coomera Springs and wish him all the success in the future. Our school will be a little poorer for his absence. Good luck you will certainly be missed.

Farewell Mrs Ogden

Once again in our school newsletter I say farewell to a teacher that has been with us for 3 years. Mrs Louisa Ogden has been successful in picking up a position at a local private school. I would like to thank Mrs Ogden for her service, passion and commitment in her time at Coomera Springs. Mrs Ogden will be an enormous loss to our staffing family.

Music Centre of Excellence 2017

We are very excited to announce that there will be another Music Centre of Excellence Class going in to Year 3 next year! There will be a parent information session in Week 4 of this term for the parents of our current Year 2 cohort. During the session you will hear all about the benefits of Music Education, the particulars of our program here at CSSS, and some examples of learning opportunities experienced by the COE class from 2016.

The date will be published closer to the time, parents of our current Year 2 students are encouraged to come along and hear about this exciting program!

The COE will be designed to support and complement the school's academic programs to increase student achievement across all curriculum areas. The benefits to children who study music are widely known and supported by research. The following is a summary of points from the "Music to Our Ears" report, which is a joint initiative of the Music Council of Australia:

https://musicaustralia.org.au/publications/research-report-music-to-our-ears/

a. Learning music develops and improves learning abilities.

b. Learning music improves auditory skills.

c. Learning music enhances early childhood development of the brain.

d. Learning music can enhance non-musical abilities.

e. Learning music improves test scores in key academic subjects.

f. Learning music helps under-achieving students catch up

Report Cards

Our teaching teams are busy not only finalising report card comments, but more importantly, teaching and assessing student knowledge and skills within their classrooms. If you are planning going on a short break and taking your child out of school at any stage this term, please understand that important assessment is taking place and that this may have an impact on the level of evidence that teachers will have when reporting on your child. Report cards will be distributed in the last week of term. As we always recommend, if you have a concern about your child's academic development before report cards are released, please always feel confident in accessing your child's teacher as your first point of contact.

Year 6 Graduation

Monday December 5th is shaping up to be a night to remember for our Year Six students. This year's graduation dinner will be at Movieworld and our students have a lot to look forward to. As I have reminded them, their studies over the next few weeks are paramount and this needs to remain as their focus. The graduation dinner however, will be a wonderful celebration of our students' journey at Coomera Springs State School. Please see Judy at the payment window or pay online for your family's graduation tickets.

Thank You and Farewell

It is with some sadness and excitement that I announce my departure from the Coomera Springs Community. As of Monday 7th of November until the end of next year, I will be the Acting Principal of Shailer Park State School. My leadership journey has certainly been an eventful one so far, and my time at Coomera Springs has been immensely rewarding. To Mr Haley, Mrs Gill and the members of our Admin team, it's been a pleasure working with you all. Our amazing teachers and teacher-aides are as passionate as you will ever see and our wonderful ladies in the office have definitely kept me on my toes! To our auxiliary staff, thank you for keeping our school beautiful. Thank you to our P&C who are just amazing, and do so much behind the scenes to make our school great. But most of all, thank you to our students. You are the reason that I put one hundred percent into all that I do. I will certainly miss you all. Thank you Coomera Springs.

News from our Chaplain

Chappy News

This fortnight has been a great opportunity for myself to finally get Mini Men Shed happening with the first group underway to starting their first project. I would firstly like to thank all those who have generously donated tool, bikes, scooters and wood work materials. It would not happen without your generosity. As for other news that is about all for the time being.

Food for thought

These last few weeks have been a bit of a roller coaster ride with lots of things happening but particularly, the passing of a close friend of mine who was more of an adopted grandpa. He was a very loving and caring man and was someone who always had time for other people. We actually met a number of years ago at my favourite coffee shop and over time became really close because every time we saw each other we would always sit and have a chat, sometimes those chats went for a few hours. He taught me that it wasn't about getting ahead in life. It was about caring for the people around you and doing your part for society. He was the type of person who would take hours to get somewhere because he would just keep stopping to talk to people. Sometimes we get so caught up in things that are going on for us, and forget about those around us. I was challenged to make sure that I don't forget the people around me but instead, do everything I can to help those around me and play my part in the community. R.I.P. Arnie.

Social Media and Children

We believe that parents need to be aware of the apps that are on their child's device and how they are being used. These apps also have a large impact on peer-groups and friendships that exist within our school setting. As outlined below, most of our students are not of legal age to even have a social media account. Like you, we want to keep our students safe, whilst also teaching them appropriate usage of information and communication technologies.

Please also refer to the support guidelines that have been published on the Australian Government's e-safety website.

Facebook: Facebook is available to people over the age of 13. Facebook will not create an account for a person who lists their age as under 13.

Instagram: You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service.

Musical.ly: Musical.ly is intended for people over the age of 13, based on the following content warning: Infrequent/mild profanity or crude humour

  • Infrequent/mild sexual content and nudity
  • Infrequent/mild mature/suggestive themes
  • Infrequent/mild cartoon or fantasy violence
  • Infrequent/mild alcohol, tobacco, or drug use or references

Other important information to be aware about when using Music.ly includes:

  • users (aka Musers) can search for other users near their own location/city
  • muser-generated videos can be viewed and shared on other social media and messaging apps. This means, you may lose control of who sees your video
  • musers can comment on other muser's videos.

Kik Messenger: Kik is available to people over the age of 13. However, if you are between the ages of 13-18 years old, you may only use the site if your parent or guardian consents to the Terms of Service on your behalf.

As a school, we will do all we can to keep our students safe and teach cyber-safety behaviours. We also continue to teach social skills and behaviours that promote positive friendships and interactions.
