Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome to Term 3. I trust that everyone had a safe and relaxing winter vacation, and enjoyed some of the best winter days ever.

It was great to be able to come back to school and finally hold our postponed Sports Carnivals. Definitely not as sunny as we had hoped, but still the rain did hold off and our students enjoyed the many races and activities held on both days. Thank you to both Mr Gall and Mrs Hodder for their fantastic organisation of this event.

Beautification Program Continues

Hopefully you have noticed the many different projects that have been happening around our school this year. We started with the multiplication stairs, and concrete art – both of these adding some great life and colour to our school. The next project was our outdoor classroom. This was dreamt up and designed by Mr Haley, and has turned out to be a spectacular and unique addition to our school.

We are now at the next stage of beautification program with the installation of a new adventure playground in the junior playground. This will be specifically for our Year 1 and 2 students, to assist in easing congestion in and around this area. This playground has been delayed by rain, so we are told it will be ready by next week.

There is also continued work on our outdoor classroom, with the painting of a mural. Just so much happening around to continue making Coomera Springs a wonderful learning place to be.

Changes to Roll Marking and Same Day Notification to Parents

At the end of last term I wrote an important article regarding school attendance and the need for parents to inform the school for the reasons of absence. Very recently, the policy for all of Education Queensland schools has changed. Some of these changes are automatic, with the remainder coming into practice as of 2017.

From this point, any child who is in care and is absent without explanation, all Education Queensland schools are required to make same day contact with the carer.

From 2017, this same process will apply for all students enrolled in Education Queensland schools.

So what does this mean for you?

If your child is absent, you must contact the school and provide a reason. If you have not made contact, the school will contact you. At this stage, Coomera Springs State School is investigating the best method for doing this. We believe we will adopt the text message system.

Please refer to my previous article about the importance of attendance below. The same day contact system will absolutely highlight the level of attendance of all students, and regular in attendance will need to be addressed.

Did you know that Education Queensland sets a target of attendance for all students and this target is 95%. What this means is that out of the 200 school days in the year, all students are expected to attend school for 190 of those days to meet the 95% target.

How is your child tracking so far this year?

In my review of absenteeism we have a significant number of students who have well and truly exceeded what is considered to be a reasonable number of days absent. I will be making contact with each family to outline your obligations in ensuring that your child/children are attending school regularly.

Whilst I understand that children do get sick, we have an inordinate amount of absenteeism that is simply unexplained. There is also a very strong correlation to attendance and achievement. It won’t come as a big surprise to know that students who have a significant number of days off also fall behind in their learning, and in particular in English and Maths. This creates a difficult situation for our teachers who try to play catch up, but sometimes, the gaps just get too big.

So I ask you to ensure that your child/children are at school each and every day!

Real Men Read is Coming Back

Last year we introduced a wonderful culminating afternoon called Real Men Read. The afternoon is about promoting and celebrating reading, with a strong focus on showing our students that reading is done by all genders, ages and people.

Well this event is coming back in 2017, so mark this date in your diary as we plan to make it even more spectacular this year.

Date: Wednesday 31st August
Time: 3.00pm – 4.30pm
Where: Coomera Springs State School

The 2016 Kokoda Challenge

Last weekend, I participated in the 2016 Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge. This was a 96km trek through the Hinterland and is considered one of the toughest ultra-events around. Throughout my training and preparation, I was able to talk to some parents across the school who have also been a part of this challenge as well.

I would love to give you every detail of this amazing event, but I just don’t have that much space in the newsletter.

What I do want to share was that not only during the many months of training, but even more so during the event itself, I learnt and remembered so many important life lessons.

See this event is designed to challenge you to the very core. It is one that will push your physical and mental abilities to the brink. But it is a challenge that is built on the premise of team and mateship. During the course of the 31 hours out on the course, I was able to witness and be a part of this unique experience over and over again, whether it was a kind word of encouragement, or acts of physically helping others. Seeing the elation for when you reach the finish line, Even the absolute heartbreak of not being able to get there.

It reminded me of the importance of these values within our community and within our own families. That we can be better people and achieve more in numbers, when we work together, trust each other, respect each other and even gently push each other.

I know I could not have finished without my team mates and their strength and support. To cross the finish line and see my Dad waiting there, all of the emotions came flooding out. I believe this experience has strengthened my views on leadership and I encourage our community to be a part of things that challenge you and make you into the best version of yourself.

I wish everyone a wonderful week and thank you for what you add to our school community.

School Opinion Survey

The annual School Opinion Survey will be conducted 11 to 29 July 2016. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what this school does well, and how this school can improve.

Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey have been sent home with the eldest student of each family last week.

Parents/caregivers are asked to complete their survey online at the school.

Survey queries or requests for translations can be directed to Mr Taylor Haley on telephone 07 55195300 or email thale22@.eq.edu.au.

2017 Prep Enrolments

Prep enrolments for 2017 are now open. Coomera Springs State School has an exciting transition program so if you have younger siblings, friends or family ready to start Prep please don’t hesitate to enrol your child sooner rather than later.

QParents

Coomera Springs State School is proud to be one the first schools in Queensland to offer QParents.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDOEufRCR-Q

The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

  • Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
  • Behaviour information
  • Academic report cards
  • Class timetables
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details

QParents will assist both staff and parents in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way.

It won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.

The benefits of QParents

Convenience and time savings for parents

  • Parents can view or update their child’s details without having to contact the school
  • Secure 24/7 online access.
  • Available anytime, anywhere — access QParents on your smart phone, tablet or computer.

Greater transparency of information

  • Improves accountability between parents and schools by providing parents with timely access to their child’s information online.
  • Allows parents to engage more deeply in their child’s schooling

Improved administration efficiencies for schools

  • Allows schools to streamline their administrative processes and cut down on printing

What is a QParents Account Owner (QPAO)?

The school will nominate one parent or legal guardian for each student to be the QParents Account Owner (QPAO). The QPAO will be able to register for QParents to access and manage the student’s information online. A student’s QPAO will be able to view the student’s information and submit requests to update some of the student’s details.

The QPAO will also be able to invite other people (such as another parent or family member), to view the student’s information. Once invited, these people can register for QParents as “delegated viewers”. A delegated viewer can see the student’s details, but cannot make updates.

Registering for QParents

Prep parents will receive an invitation email or letter from us containing your unique invitation code in week 3 with all remaining parents receiving an invitation in week 7. Simply follow the instructions in that email or letter to complete the QParents account registration process.

If you do not want to register, you can just ignore the invitation and your child’s student information will not be available to anyone through QParents. Or, if you want another parent to be the QPAO, you can advise us and we will send them an invitation email or letter with their own unique invitation code.

Identity verification

When registering as a QPAO, you will need to verify 100 points of identity documents online. The 100 points can be made up of documents in the following list:

Australian Passport

50 pts

Australian Marriage Certificate

40 pts

Australian Driver Licence

50 pts

Australian Citizenship Certificate

40 pts

Australian Birth Certificate

50 pts

Change of Name Certificate

40 pts

Medicare Card

20 pts

Australian Visa (foreign passports)

20 pts

If you only have 60-90 points of the above ID documents you can still register for QParents, but you will need to attend the school for an additional check after you have registered online.

If you don’t have sufficient documents, you might like to nominate another parent as the QPAO.

https://qparents.qld.edu.au/

Where does the information about my child come from?

All of the information that is presented in QParents comes from the IT system that is used by all Queensland state schools. Schools will continue to manage student information in this system, and the information will be extracted and presented in QParents.

Will my child’s information be secure?

Yes. QParents is a secure portal that meets strict industry standards. Only people with the right to access information about their child will be given an account; no one else.

If you don’t want to register for QParents, your account will not be created and your child’s information will not be made available through QParents.

Triple P

Upcoming Triple P Seminar’s:

Parents all over the world have the same kinds of problems. Toddler tantrums, fighting at home or at school, a child who won’t go to bed, a defiant teen, or one who never seems to listen. The good news is the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program can help.

Triple P is a parenting program that helps make raising kids (and teenagers) easier. It gives you tips and ideas to help you deal with the big and small problems of family life. Triple P is NOT “one size fits all”. You can do as much, or as little as you like. Parenting is usually lots of fun. But every parent has times when things can get a little tricky. Like when your toddler won’t eat his/her dinner. Or your five year old won’t pick up their toys.

Coomera Springs in partnership with the Benevolent Society will be running three 90 minutes seminars starting at 3:15pm in Term 3 (Session 1 – Wednesday 10th August, Session 2 – Wednesday 17th August, Session 3 – Wednesday 24th August) which will cover three main topic:

  • The Power of Positive Parenting
  • Raising Competent, Confident Children
  • Raising Resilient Children

The three sessions will be held in our school library and we hope to see as many parents in attendance as possible. Stay tuned for further information.

Year 1 and 4 IPad classes for 2017

Just a friendly date claimer for our second 1:1 iPad information session for all Year Three and Prep parents who have children entering Years 1 & 4 in 2017.

An Expression of interest will be e-mailed out in the coming weeks. This will help determine possible staffing/ classroom structures for these year levels in 2017 and is a vital part in the iPad program process.

  • When: Tuesday 16th August @ 5:30pm
  • Where: School Library

The session will be used to discuss the following information:

  • 21st Century Pedagogies
  • Expression of interest
  • Device specifics
  • Purchasing Portal & Price Point
  • Contract and Agreements

Do not worry if you are unable to attend the session as all information covered will be emailed out to all Prep and three parents the following morning at 9:00am. This email will include details of the EOI (Expression of Interest) process and information covered in the PowerPoint presentation during the session.

NAIDOC celebrations

On Friday 15th July, the Jarjums (CSSS Indigenous students) performed and presented at a whole school assembly. The students did an amazing job of sharing with P- 6 students, many cultural, historical and musical elements that were directly related to the Yugambeh people of SE Queensland. The Jarjum students were able to teach us about some local Yugambeh words, songs, dances, dreaming stories and some significant landforms in our area that are very special or show the historical presence of the Kombumerri Indigenous people.

The power point presentation displayed district language maps, explanations about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags, photos of local landmarks, totems and about Dreamtime Jabreen (Jabreen’s fingers on the Burleigh Mountain) and Dreamtime Gowanda the white finned dolphin.

Two of the highlights of the presentation included watching ‘Uncle Tony’ play the didgeridoo and hearing the National Anthem sung in the local Yugambeh language by a local singer, Ms.Kruger.

All CSSS students returned to class after the assembly and engaged in Indigenous related dance, art, stories, song and play.

On behalf of CSSS, the Jarjums are to be commended for a magnificent presentation for 2016.

News from our Head of Special Education Services

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

My name is Connie McLean and I am very excited to be joining the Coomera Springs Team as acting Head of Special Education Services for Semester 2.

Nationally Collection of Data on School Students with Disability 2016

Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability.

All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability.

Each year all schools nationally will be expected to collect data on students who have a disability identified under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:

  • Number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
  • Level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
  • Broad category of disability.

Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you.

While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know.

Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:

http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html

http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact me directly.

News from our Chaplain

Chappy News

It is now the beginning of term 3 and I can’t believe where the time has gone! This term I will be running my breakfast program and boys program as usual. However, I will be starting up a new program, “Mini Men Shed.” This will be where I will have a group of boys during a lunch time where we spend time fixing up old bikes and scooters and giving them to students and other people within the community who would not otherwise be able to have their own. The catch to this is that we need old bikes and scooters that are not being used and with a bit of TLC can be restored to their former glory to be passed on to less fortunate kids. So if you have any lying around, feel free to shoot me an email (benf@chappy.org.au) or call me on 55195300.

Food for thought

So we are more than on our way into another term, and a busy one at that. During the second week of holidays I took a few days and went to Fraser Island with a bunch of mates which was exactly what I needed. It was just a great opportunity where I was forced to switch off due to no reception out there. The first day without reception was frustrating but by the end of the trip, I didn’t care, I was enjoying my time off the grid. Sometimes in life we need to force ourselves to go off the grid to be able to recharge and refresh. Life is too short to stress and work yourself into the ground. We should be getting out there whenever we can to chase new experiences and enjoy life with our loved ones. So take some time, switch off, and go and smell the roses.

News from our Guidance Officer

Who’s Responsible?

‘No one can make you feel inferior without your consent’
Eleanor Roosevelt.

If there is one thing on the rise in our society it is finger pointing – the blame game. We often hear the statement `he made me do it’ or ‘you make me feel…’. People are blaming others more than themselves for their own actions or feelings. When we make these statements we are actually saying we have no control over our actions or feelings - others have the capacity to manipulate us without our consent. But is this the case? An example of this has occurred lately in the news. TV commercials have been blamed for creating overweight youngsters, because of the time slot they advertise ‘unhealthy products’, but we need to recognize who buys the food that is in the house.

It comes down to accepting responsibility for one’s actions/one’s feelings. When others are blamed it takes away the need for action and change. In shouldering responsibility ourselves, we are giving ourselves the power to shape our outcomes, and are therefore taking an active role (accepting or making change) and not a passive role (hoping someone else will fix the problem) in how the outcome turns out.

Nelson Mandela (South African activist for human rights) is a fine example of taking responsibility and working for change. He was held in prison for 27 years because of his beliefs of equality for all people. Many people have remarked on the apparent lack of bitterness that characterizes Mandela's conduct since he was released from prison. He himself has said that perhaps he would have harbored bitter thoughts if he had not had a job to do (which was to create a South Africa for all people to live harmoniously).

Here are some tips:

  • Take responsibility for your actions/ feelings. If you are in the wrong, admit it immediately and say you are sorry. Too many disagreements or arguments could be solved by merely admitting you were wrong. If you are feeling a certain way, know it is your choice to feel that way; if you don’t like the feeling change what you are doing.
  • Find a solution – Make change where possible. If you were wrong, find a solution to fix the matter.
  • Don’t delay - It is very important to not delay taking responsibility for your actions/ feelings. The longer time passes, the more people you may hurt, the more you may lose respect, or lose friendships

We also offer fresh made to order sandwiches, wraps, Devonshire teas, toasted sandwiches and a few gluten free alternatives, to name a few.

Our Devonshire teas and ham, cheese, tomato toasted sandwiches are on a permanent special at $5.00.

We are a Pay it Forward café. So what does this mean? We collectively pool tips and donations, which are topped up from sales. This is given back to the community by way of tokens. These can be exchanged for a meal or drink for those that are finding it a little tuff.

We also host morning tea and scones for residents of the local aged care facilities with the Pay it Forward programme.
