Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome Back
Welcome back to the 2016 school year. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new families to Coomera Springs. It was with much excitement and a whole lot of planning that we were able to start our year so smoothly and welcome all of our students back.
To see all of the bright and smiling faces, new and returning, the immaculate uniforms and shoes was such a delight. With around 130 new prep students starting, there was always the potential for tears, but I am happy to share that sad faces were at an absolute minimum.
I trust all of our families had a wonderful summer vacation and that you are all ready for the learning journey ahead.
At the time of writing this newsletter, we (being the school) are in the process of what is called ‘Day 8 staffing’. This is the process that all state schools undertake each year, and what it means is that on both days 4 and 8, I submit what our effective enrolment numbers are and the staffing and budget allocations across the state are determined on these numbers. It’s imperative that we are absolutely accurate on the numbers submitted, and what it can mean is that some class changes are affected by the allocations that the department provide to us.
This has been the case for Coomera Springs this year and we have communicated the changes to the students and families affected by this. We have worked hard to ensure this transition is smooth and all changes will take effect as of Monday 8th February. I want to thank the families who have been impacted by these changes for their understanding.
Who Is Who in Admin?
Since starting at Coomera Springs in 2012 we have grown significantly. In this time we have had changes in our administration team too. So I thought this would be a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to you.
Martine Gill - Principal:
I began teaching all the way back in 1996 (yes you have read that correctly, it was in the last millennia). I had actually studied the greater part of my degree to be a high school teacher and no surprises here, my teaching areas were English and Drama. However, I felt that I would be better suited to working with younger children and made the switch to complete my degree in Primary. I have taught quite a number of year levels across the school and taught in 2 schools before taking on a regional role that focused on the explicit teaching of reading. I was able to work in both primary and secondary settings for this role and it was this experience that prompted me to apply for a leadership position.
I then started my administrative career as a Deputy Principal in 2004 at Upper Coomera State College. In 2011, I was appointed as the Principal of St Bernard SS, before starting here at Coomera Springs SS in 2012.
I am a complete advocate for state education and I feel privileged to be able to lead our school community in its learning journey.
Even in the busy nature of school life, I am a lucky person outside of school. I have spent the better part of my life with my wonderful husband Adam. We met in Year 10 and this year are celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary. We live a fairly active life with Adam always out and about cycling and I seem to have a penchant for taking on challenges. Last year I was excited to complete the trifecta of Spartan Adventure Races. This year I am taking on the 96km Kokoda Challenge in July. But you should know that I am not the most coordinated person going around.
I am also an avid reader and love cooking. Sometimes I even manage to bring in my baking to share with the team.
I am excited for the year ahead and I am proud to be a major part of the Coomera Springs Community.
Taylor Haley – Deputy Principal (Prep – 1):
Welcome back everyone, but a special welcome to our new Prep families as well as any new families in other areas of our school. My name is Taylor Haley. I am one of three Deputy Principals at Coomera Springs State School. My role in 2016 is centred on looking after students, staff and families in Prep and Year 1.
I grew up in Tasmania and moved to Queensland and Burleigh Heads area in 2007. I have been working at Coomera Springs for 6 years now and truly love the staff and students I interact with each day. I am the very lucky husband of my wife Sarah, and even prouder Dad of my little boy Knox.
Please always come over and say hi, it’s fantastic to put faces and names to parents of our lovely students.
This is a photo of all three of us on a London double decker open aired bus last year.
Elvis Gegic - Deputy Principal (2-3):
My name is Elvis Gegić. I am a Deputy Principal at Coomera Springs State School. I enjoy working with children and helping them reach their potential through education. I believe every child should be valued and treated with respect. An education should empower and help students make a positive contribution to our world.
I am always learning and growing within my profession. I have experienced several roles within education and have had the opportunity to develop and implement programs for primary aged children and the wider school community.
I am a life long learner, and enjoy ongoing professional development opportunities; I regularly attend workshops and in-services provided by a variety of agencies.
My wife and I have a beautiful family and a loyal 8-year-old Staffordshire Bullterrier.
I look forward to getting to know all of you this school year!
Dave Hartley – Deputy Principal (4-6):
I began my teaching career in 2000 and taught a variety of grades at Labrador State School, including Years 1, 4, 5 and 6. After teaching in the classroom for nine years, I stepped into a numeracy coach role, before becoming an acting deputy principal at Waterford West in 2010. I gained a permanent deputy principal position and moved to Woodridge North State School and was then fortunate enough to be selected as deputy principal at Coomera Springs State School last year. I love this school!
I am married to Helen (also a teacher) and I have two daughters, Kirra (15) and Jaya (10). I love spending time at the surf with my family and chilling at home watching the footy (go Queensland!). I also write books.
I have written three books with my good mate and ex-NRL player Scotty Prince and I¹m currently in the middle of a big top secret writing project! To keep fit I box, run, surf and swim. If I won the lotto, I wouldn¹t give up work, but I would drive to school everyday in the Batmobile (the 1960¹s version). I¹d even drop my girls to school in it and embarrass them in front of their mates. Somehow I can¹t see myself wining the lotto anytime soon.
As a passionate educator, I want your child to receive an excellent education. I am very approachable and always happy to make an appointment with you should you feel the need to have a conversation. The success and reputation of our school is the result of a hard-working school-community who pride themselves on having your students in our school. This is a huge a responsibility, but one that we relish and regard with honour. Please come and say hi if you¹re around!
Lisa Partridge – Head of Special Education Services:
Hello! My name is Lisa Partridge and I am the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES) here at Coomera Springs State School. I have been working in the Education field for more than 10 years and during that time I have had a number of roles including Advisory Visiting Teaching, HOSES in Early Childhood Development Programs, Primary Schools, and Prep-Year 12 settings and Deputy Principal.
In our next newsletter, I will introduce to your our wonderful office ladies!
Love Our School
We are once again embracing 2 special events:
- International Book Giving Day
- Love Our School
International Book Giving Day falls on February 14th, and so too does the famous day of love – Valentine’s Day. In the past we have combined these two events into a special one called ‘Love Our School’. With this initiative we ask families to donate a new book (primary school appropriate) to our library. If you could deliver this book to the office and we have a special card to be glued inside the front cover so that your kind donation will be recognised within our school.
In the past we have received over 180 books. As our school has grown significantly, we would love to see if this year we can hit over the 250 mark. We will keep our community up to date with a book-o-meter.
All books need to be received by Feb 14th.
We thank you in anticipation for continuing to support our school and our love of READING!
School Communication
I encourage all of our community to stay on top of all the communication that comes home from school. We use a variety of methods to send home our messages. These include our newsletters (on even weeks it will be a whole school newsletter, on odd weeks a class newsletter), emails as well as social media updates.
We work very hard to reduce the use of paper in our school, so we do keep the majority of communication paperless.
We also host parent meetings and in fact our Parent Information Sessions for 2016 will be held in the coming weeks. Your class teacher will inform you of the date and time. I encourage you to come along to this event because it is the best way of learning about what is ahead for your child.
Road Safety
Road safety and car parking always remains high on our agenda. Please find attached a message from our Gold Coast Road Policing Unit:
‘The Gold Coast Road policing Unit are seeking your help in again highlighting the following issues and complaints that we get each year. We like to see everyone safe in and around our schools and if parents could take note of the following and adhere to the road rules we can create a safe environment for all. We understand that this time of year sees new school children arriving at most schools and this is often an exciting and stressful time for both parents and students. Remember that by not adhering to the road rules you are placing both your own children and the children of others at risk of injury or worse.
- Speed Limits. By now hopefully all parents

News from Our Deputy Principals
1:1 iPad Program
Our Year One and Four iPad classes have begun learning with their devices and all students and teachers are thoroughly engaged in the beginning of this learning journey. The last week hasn’t been without the odd hiccup or teething problem and we thank you for your patience as our network adapts to the higher volumes of internet traffic and connectivity. We are working hard on streamlining our usernames and passwords to ensure that students have immediate success when signing on each day and connecting to the network. Our teachers are busy selecting applications that maximise learning and engagement. These apps will be uploaded throughout the term, so please look at your child’s device regularly and ask them questions about what they are learning in class. Students will have the ability to show you their work samples and some feedback received from their teachers, which is very important for student development and goal-setting. Student independence is key to their success within the 1:1 iPad program, so please ensure that any security settings you enable on the device do not effect the device’s ability to connect to the school’s network. Please also ensure that your child knows and remembers the security/pin code that has been set on the device.
Rocket to Success Program
Last year we introduced the Rocket to Success Program with a focus on reading and number (problem solving). Students in Years 3 and 5 were selected based on performance data and participated in this program during Term 1 and 2 leading up to NAPLAN. The program then resumed in Term 4, but picking up identified students in Years 2 and 4.
This program is a specifically targeted program for extension work and aligned to not only NAPLAN, but overall knowledge and skills in reading and number. This year we have extended our program to include writing.
Selected students from grades 3 and 5 have been participating in extension writing lessons, starting this week. As we prepare these students for NAPLAN success, we are also developing good writing habits based on Jen McVeity’s Seven Steps to Writing. Mr Hartley, Mr Haley, Mrs Smith and Miss Rodham will be conducting these classes in the library during Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes. Thank you to the students who have returned their permission forms. We are having a lot of fun with our budding young authors!
The Reading and Number program will resume in week 4 and parents will once again be notified via a letter about the day and time for their child to attend. Both reading and number will occur before school at 8am in the LIFT room and will once again be run by Mrs Gill and Miss Lancaster (Reading) and Mr Gegic and Mr Penny (Number).
Specialist Timetables
In 2016 each Prep to Year 6 student will receive a minimum of 45 minutes of both Music and Physical Education specialist lessons. Your child will need to wear their sports uniform on the below day;
Extra-Curricular
Coomera Springs State School has always offered an extensive Extra-Curricular program. This will continue in 2016 because we have a large teaching staff with many different skill sets on offer. These programs will run before, during and after school with all relevant information being detailed in our next school newsletter.
Online Programs
This year we continue our commitment to online learning environments that support and enhance teaching and learning in both the classroom and at home. This commitment includes a focus on following interactive applications:
Mathletics:
A multi-award winning learning resource that encourages students and rewards results – hugely popular with students, educators and parents alike. Mathletics gives each student their own personal learning space. Filled with targeted curriculum content, interactive tutorials and support, alongside engaging games and rewards – the Student Console is a powerful hub of learning.
Reading Eggs:
ABC Reading Eggs supports students in the core reading and literacy skills they need for success at school. Developed by a team of experienced primary educators, these highly interactive lessons are effective because they are based on solid scientific research. The engaging one-on-one learning activities contain colourful animations, fun music and exciting rewards that keep children motivated to learn!
Literacy Planet:
LiteracyPlanet is designed by Australian educators and aligned to the Australian curriculum. LiteracyPlanet’s mission and the passion of the LiteracyPlanet team is to lead the way in education technology and improve literacy skills nationwide. LiteracyPlanet aims to achieve this by providing a literacy learning experience for children of all abilities that is accessible, inclusive, empowering and effective, but most of all fun.
Behaviour Focus
Behaviour of the Week
This week we continue with “BE A LEARNER: Be prepared!”
• Being organized
• Recording and remembering things you need to do
• Using your time wisely in class
• Eating a good lunch and drinking lots of water
• Using the toilet and getting a drink
• Being prepared for the challenges of the day

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am really looking forward to working with the students and families of Coomera Springs State School again in 2016.

What’s Happening
So the year has kicked off to a flying start and it has been awesome to be able to come back and be able to continue working with the students from last year and getting to know some new faces. Last year we had the breaky club on Wednesday and Friday mornings, but for now it is on hold until I am able to find some volunteers to help out. Also in the coming weeks I am excited to announce that the boys group will kick off again. I am excited to see what happens this year with the boys club, as we saw a lot of positive things come out of it last year. Apart from that, there is not much else to report on, so until next fortnight, stay tuned.
Thought for the week
Thinking about it this week and last week, I began to ponder on the idea of change, whether it be the environment we’re in, family changes or even job changes. For the students this week and last week, it’s the having to readjust to the routine of school Monday to Friday and only having the weekends to be able to relax and do fun things. Change can be a really easy thing for some, while others like me, really struggle with change and having to readjust. But the thing about change is that it can bring about growth and resilience. It allows us to see things from a different angle and also presents us with opportunities we would not have had in the first place. So I guess my thought for the week is that even though change can be as painful as pulling a tooth out for some, we need to embrace it and see it as the challenge it is.

News from our Guidance Officer
Welcome to the new school year! I felt that this article was relevant and interesting considering we are all starting 2016 with a new class and teacher. Enjoy the year with your children and assist them in feeling ‘connected’ to school.
Feeling Connected at School
When kids feel part of their school community and are cared for by people at their school, they are less likely to get into trouble. They also have higher levels of emotional well-being.
This feeling of belonging, often called “connectedness,” can be especially important during times of stress or when difficult decisions have to be made.
Adults and peers, curricular and extracurricular activities, policies and practices all affect the level of connectedness your child feels at school.
This article:
- Defines school connectedness.
- Explains the importance of being connected to the school.
- Suggests ways for parents and teachers to help kids feel more connected at school.
What Is School Connectedness?
These are some of the major elements that help kids feel they belong and are cared for at their school:
- Teachers who support and care for individual students.
- Good friends at school.
- Parents and students caring about current and future academic performance.
- Discipline policies that are fair and efficient.
- Participating in extracurricular activities
Benefits of Connectedness
Some of the benefits of helping students feel a sense of connectedness to their school community are listed below.
- Academic benefits: “Connected” kids are more likely to attend school regularly, pay attention to their grades and pursue post-secondary education.
- Reducing risky behaviour: Students who feel a sense of belonging to the school community are less likely to be involved in activities such as smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, early sexual activity, drinking and driving, suicide attempts and weapon-related violence.
- Mental well-being: Connected kids are less likely to have emotional distress or experience abuse. They are able to handle stress effectively and are more resilient (that is, they can bounce back from stress).
How Parents Can Help Kids Feel More Connected At School
The first step is to recognize the importance of school connectedness in your child’s life and development. Second, use the information in the “What Is School Connectedness?” section above to assess your child’s school situation.
As a parent, you can take these steps to influence your child’s level of connectedness:
- Attend parent-teacher meetings and get to know all of your child’s teachers through regular conversations.
- Be involved with the school. Go on field trips, volunteer and know what is happening at the school.
- Get to know your child’s friends and their families, and encourage positive peer relationships.
- Talk to your children about their grades and effort, and access resources to help you ensure they are reaching their potential and taking ownership of their performance.
- Discuss the school’s discipline policy with teachers and administrators.
- Encourage your child to get involved. Most schools offer a wide variety of extracurricular options, from band to basketball.
Your child’s sense of belonging to school (connectedness) plays a key role, not only in academic success but also in decreasing risky behaviour and supporting mental well-being.
Talk with your children about how connected they feel at school. Above all, involve yourself in their school lives and be aware of what happens there, both negatively and positively.

News from our PE Department
Welcome Back! As we have started the year with extremely hot days, just a reminder that here at CSSS our PE lessons during the heat/and or rain are conducted in our hall or undercover areas. This ensures that children are not over exposed to the elements. Please remember to pack large drink bottles, especially on your child’s allocated PE days during the hot weather.
Parents, sporting enthusiasts and Google experts……have a go at our Sports Quiz question of the week!
SPORTS QUIZ QUESTION 1:
Who has the record for most NRL grand final wins????
Healthy fact:
Drinking water is the best way to quench your thirst. Even better, it doesn’t come with all the sugar and energy (kilojoules) found in fruit juice drinks, soft drinks, sports drinks and flavored mineral waters.
Drinking water instead of sweetened drinks also prevents dental problems, while the fluoride found in tap water can help strengthen teeth and bones.
REMINDERS:
- ‘Running and fitness club’ will be held on Thursday mornings from 8:00 to 8:30am and is open to all students from grade 4 to 6. The sessions will be run by Mr Fletcher and Mr Gall. The sessions will include training for upcoming events ( 17th March - cross country), fitness circuits, team challenges and of course – games!
- I hope all students are enjoying and are appropriately using all the sports equipment that had been put out into classrooms.
- In 2016, all Coomera Springs State School children in grades 4, 5 and 6 have been invited to join in the Gala Sports Days against Park Lake State School and Highland Reserve State School. These Gala sports days will occur over all four terms this year. Each of these schools will hold a variety of different team sports over the four terms. The sports being played over the year will be:
- Term 1 (1st of March) - Soccer,
- Term 2 (24th of May) - Mini Sports day,
- Term 3 (30th of August) - Touch Football and
- Term 4 (25th of October) - Aussie Rules and Netball.
